EDITOR RUBBER In the last three 'months crude rubber has more than doubled 'in price ; that is, going from Ir cents a pound to above 70 cents. There's a good practical lesson in the rubber industry for any person who considers any form of inverting. The. demand for rubber products is huge. One American company -manufactures more than JO,000 -different rubber articles. The producing of 2".(HI automobile tires a day by one concern is not considered remarkable. Kadi of the 10,000 new. ears turned out every day must have at least four tires, 'and the 17,- f(K 1,000 cars and trucks already running round the country use tires. It's a great business. It will endure, and' the.' capable rubber companies will make money. Hut a number of the small and the in capably managed companies will have trouble getting through now that rubber prices have soared. Some won't get through. With, low-priced low-priced crude rubber and with the" demand there is in the United States, moKt any half way efficient rubber manufacturer could get along. Hut now that the British control of crude rubber has riased "The price and will try to keep it where it wants it for some time, it's a different story. British rubber plantations in Ceylon and Malay states produce about half the world's supply of rubber. The British rubber planters plant-ers have a regular control system, called the Stevenson plan. If the "price gets low the supply is stopped. As the price goes up the supply is not dumped but is regulated according to price.: Today the. crude rubber supply in London is about fi.000 tons. A year ago it was ten times that amount, and was alont l.r0.000 tons when the Stevenson plan was put into effect.' - Rubber, like every other business, has- its ups and downs. . The capable companies in rubber or anything else, survive. The dreamers dream-ers and incompetents drop ont. If you would put money into oil, rubber, rub-ber, steel or anything, learn first if the company has had experience in weathering the. obstacles that every- form, of luisiness meeti periodically. . Your Money WHAT A GOOD BAND MEANS TO A TOWN Sometimes a bank is criticized for it conservatism con-servatism in making loans. Why is a bank careful? . Simply because its money is your money. We have no moral right to be careless of funds entrusted to us. Our deposits represent the slender savings of little children; the estates of wciows that must last them for life ; the earnings of the laborer ; the working capital of the merchant, and the profits of the farmer. Every substantial loan made by this bank must be amply secured. A conservative bank is the place to deposit your funds. You may have reason to allow the silly question to go unanswered. un-answered. 13ut regarding the remark more seriously, let us say that a good band is one of the best advertisements a town can have. Emerson says something like this in regard to the world making a beaten path. Well a good band will make,, all the roads leading to the town beaten paths, even though the town's other attractions be not numerous; every merchant is benefited by a good band. Many people come to town to attend the delightful entertainments, and they ' combine shopping with this pleasure. The promoters of business and musical enterprises always have the satisfaction of knowing that tlicir demonstrations from time to time will be successful, because they have a first-class band to lead the parade and attract the crowd. A band composed of able players is a tower of strength to any section of the country. It cultivates the public ear to a high class of music, and does it right at your door too. Every enterprising citizen will boost the band wherever it goes. per cent fo the people the sure way to get ahead is to save) with some system of regularity and, as their savings grow, to nut them to work in established business known to be honest and able to earn inoiiev.
