IS 1 I rrRv Tir Although osteoporosis has received its share of media attention recently, it is still little understood and too often ignored by the majority of women. Young women think of it as an "old lady's condition," and for many older women, irreversible damage has already occurred. The fact is that although no one has to be disabled by osteoporosis, prevention must begin early and women must be well informed about the problem. Osteoporosis is not, strictly speaking, a disease. It is the end result of a. prolonged process in which bones thin and become increasingly porous. Unfortunately, the bones of the spine are often the first to show osteoporotic changes. As the vertebrae get weaker and more porous, they gradually become deformed and eventually may actually collapse. Often several vertebrae collapse at a time, pulling the rib cage towards the hips and creating kyphosis of the upper spine, the so-called "dowager's hump." In such cases, women may lose as much as two inches of their height in a matter of weeks; overall, they can actually lose up to 8 inches in height which results not only in physical deformity and severe pain, but in emotional pain and crippling as well. We simplified the whole process when we contacted Gunthers. Russ Gunther came to our home, researched the important variables of our house and assessed our wants. He explained very clearly his findings, helped us understand central air and patiently answered all of our inquiries. He gave us two recommendations, each with a price quote. From there we made our educated choice and felt good about it.
