Bangerter in ceremonies held in Salt Lake City April 28. Eileen D. Glathar was honored for her outstanding volunteer service ser-vice with Project Read and the Scera Elementary School Resource Center. Cen-ter. Despite having contracted Multiple Mul-tiple Sclerosis, Glathar has turned her energy and talents to teaching others how to read. Her enthusiasm motivates struggling students to double their own efforts to learn to read. Glathar has gone above and be yond her regular volunteer duties by corresponding with a student when he was out of town, recording Louis L' Amour books to stimulate the interest of a student and creating creat-ing innovative "fun days" for her younger students. In addition to her tutoring, Glathar has also taken on new responsibilities. re-sponsibilities. She has attended a convention on illiteracy, agreed to be the chairperson of the Tutor Appreciation Ap-preciation Christmas party and volunteered vol-unteered to be a teacher's aide.' American Fork High School is preparing a musical theater concert featuring the works of Rogers and Hammerstien,. The concert will be presented Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9, at 7 p.m. in the American Fork High School auditorium. Tickets are $3.50 for general admission, $3 for students. stu-dents. The revue is the recital performance perfor-mance of the Musical Theater class which is taught by Amy Jensen. The cast consists of 27 students who have received training in m usic and drama over the last half of the school year. According to Mrs. Jensen, the program will consist of some of the best songs from the Broadway stage, and will include familiar songs such as "People Will Say We're in Love" from "Oklahoma, and "Sixteen Go-ingOn Go-ingOn Seventeen" from "The Sound of Music." Others not as familiar, but no less entertaining, will include "Tell Me on a Sunday from "Song & Dance." Each number has been staged and choreographed in the tradition of Broadway. As the title indicates, the theme of the concert is love, and the program pro-gram is divided into sections such as Men vs. Women, Falling in Love, Falling out Love, etc. "This production is a true combination combi-nation of all the aspects of theater," Jensen said. "The students are not only challenged in music, dance and dialogue, but in the technical theater the-ater fields as well." The concert will feature the most extensive lighting design of the school year, she said. Spanish lessons give police added dimension American Fork Police are adding another dimension to their training - Spanish. Police chief John Durrant said because the Spanish community in the area is growing, officers decided to learn basic Spanish to help them in their work. And, the knowledge is not only helpingofficers better converse when they stop someone, but is proving a public relations tool. "It's been a good, positive experience," experi-ence," he said. "They see we are trying to learn their language and they want to help us." Durrant recalled when officers first began taking classes, one stopped a Spanish speaking individual indi-vidual and tried to talk to him in Spanish. Instead of asking if the individual had had "two beers, however, how-ever, he asked if he had "two hats." Where previously the man had been on the defensive, now he startedlaughingand came willingly to the police station. "He didn't want to leave he wanted to stay and help the officer learn Spanish," Durrant said. This is more often the case then not, he said. He said officers stop someone who speaks Spanish two or three times a week and "it helps to be able to converse with them if we know a little, of their language, to better understand their culture." These individuals also need help when they come to court or when they areeithervictimsor witnesses," he said - and it is not always pos- Alpine receives historical preservation grant By RACHEL C. MURDOCK Alpine City has been awarded a $2,216 grant from the Certified Local Lo-cal Government program, which provides matching grants to cities and counties for local historic preservation pres-ervation projects. Alpine City's historic preservation preserva-tion is under the direction of Councilman Coun-cilman Robert Smith of the city council, and the Historic Preservation Preserva-tion Society of Alpine. Wayne Hardman, half of the caretaker care-taker couple at the Alpine City Historical His-torical Moyle Park, is now serving as president of the society. Smith said the grant will be used for shingles on the DUP relic hall, which has already been placed on the national register of historic places. "That building really is historic," said Smith. "It was built as a meetinghouse, meet-inghouse, the used as a school house and then as a city hall." The funds will also pay for intensive-level surveys on two of the older homes in Alpine to see if they qualify for historic designation. "The old-timers will know the homes as theold Scott Carlyle home and the old James Beck home," said Smith. The committee also plans to purchase pur-chase a National Register plaque for the town hall. Ticket-huying crowd 'trashes' Smiths Police were kept busy during the week with a variety of complaints and investigations. Smith's Food and Drug Center, 240 West State, was reported "trashed" when crowds gathered Friday night to wait to purchase tickets for the Garth Brooks concert in Salt Lake. Litter was left in the store as well as outside following the ticket sales on Saturday morning. morn-ing.
