Show AFHS Citizen of the Week: J.D. Wilkins J.D. Wilkins, senior at American Ameri-can Fork High School, has been named the school's Citizen of the Week. He is 17 years old and the oldest of six children of Craig and Chris Wilkins. Bom and raised in American Ameri-can Fork, He attended Barratt Elementary in the early grades. J.D. says he enjoys his position in the family. "A lot of responsibility comes with being the oldest,"he said, "but it's good too." Fishing and hunting for elk, deer and pheasant are among his favorite favor-ite hobbies. He also enjoys playing sports "just in the neighborhood. I'm not on the school teams," he said. "Football is probably my favorite one." Going to movies and reading, especially biographies, round out his hobbies. Asked about his favorite classes, J.D. didn't hesitate. He named Advanced Placement (AP) biology from Max Reese and Spanish from Stan Thompson. The tour will begin Dec. 28 and you will be back home on Jan. 4. Highlights of the trip will include in-clude Las Vegas, Catalina Island Cruise, Disneyland, Beverly Hills, Knotts Berry Farm, The World Famous Rose Parade, San Diego, Old Town, Tijuana, Huntington Estate, and more. Daddy, daughter dance set A Girl Scout Daddy-Daughter Dance will be held Saturday, Sept. 16, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Pleasant Grove Senior Citizens Center. The cost os $5 per couple (a father and his daughter), and $2 for each additional person. There will be a drawing for a quilt and refreshments will be served. Spanish teacher Thompson was the one who nominated J.D. for the honor. He said, 'J.D. has a very mature attitude. He has a good outlook on life, and is happy, a hard worker, responsible and a good student." J.D. is currently enrolled in another AP class, history. It prepares pre-pares him to take a placement test, which if he passes gives him college credit for the subject. In addition, he is taking trigonometry, trigo-nometry, human biology and first aid athletic training. "I am kind of interested in health and problems with the body," he said. "I may study genetics and genetic disabilities." Future plans call for college, probably at BYU. He will take general education classes prior to serving an LDS mission. During the summer before college, col-lege, he plans on working. "I think I would enjoy working for the forest service," he said. Past years have found J.D. working for a lawn mowing service Monthly Health Clinic On the second and third Thursdays Thurs-days of this month, be sure to take advantage of the Health Clinic at the American Fork Senior Citizen Center. This opportunity is open to anyone in the area 60 years of age or older and many health services are open to you. The clinics will be held this month on Thursday, Sept. 14, and also on Thursday, Sept. 21, from 8 until 11 a.m. In addition to receiving a cholesterol test, they will give a complete blood chemistry, chemis-try, a blood count, cardiac rick test, urinalysis test, colon rectal test and many other services. Please call ahead of time at the Senior Center, 756-2826 to make an appointment. Many of the tests are free of charge and a few have a minimal charge. This is a great opportunity for the seniors in American fork and area. He is known for his service in the community. He volunteers to help families in the neighborhood as th ey prepare to move or do build-ing build-ing projects. An Eagle scout, J.D.'s service project was cleaning and painting a fence around the gravesite of early American Fork canyon miner George Tyng, who is buried in the canyon. J.D. also erected a plaque to identify iden-tify the grave. He considered the events of his high school years so far and decided de-cided that passing the AP biology test in his junior year and attending attend-ing football and basketball games among the highlights he will long remember. With a grade point average of 3.5, J.D. says he manages to keep his grades up by a simple philosophy. philoso-phy. "Just go for it, that's what I say," he quipped. Bridge and Card Afternoon to Begin On Wednesday, Sept 27, the card playing ladies of the area are invited to meet at the Senior Center Cen-ter at 1 p.m. for a nice afternoon of bridge, pinochle, hearts or any other game of your choice. Auditions will be held Thursday and Friday, Sept. 21 and 22 in room 4 at Forbes Elementary School, 281 N. 200 East, American Fork. They will be from 4:05 to 5 p.m. Each child who auditions should be able to read music and should bring a short musical number ready to sing.
