October is Family Health Month The American Academy of Family Physicians has designated the month of October as "Family Health Month." This is an excellent time to evaluate the family's health: Proper Nutrition: Reduce the proportion of saturated fats in the family's diet. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Avoid excess salt and refined sugar. Health Checkups: Schedule periodic physical examinations and immunizations for the family. Physical Fitness: Keep fit and burn calories through safe activities (e.g., walking, bicycling, gardening or swimming). Whatever activity you chose, keep it simple. It is not always necessary to purchase expensive exercise clothes or complicated com-plicated equipment. Mental Health: Encourage family members to learn hm to handle daily pressures and stress. Emphasize the importance of developing a well-rounded life. Home Hazards: Protect the family through proper storage of household products and medicines; install smoke detectors: discuss fire evacuation. Alcohol and Tobacco: Minimize or eliminate the use of alcohol and tobacco products. Good health may help the family live longer and enjoy life more. Health I.Q. Quiz There is renewed interest in dietary fiber and its role in disease prevention. Fiber may help prevent: a. heart disease b. diabetes c. varicose veins d. gallstones The average American diet is considered con-sidered low in dietary fiber (roughage). A two-year California study evaluated the dietary habits of over 800 men and women. The average daily fiber intake for the entire group was moderate to low (13 grams). Individuals In-dividuals in the same group with a high-fiber intake (19 grams per day average) had 25 percent less ishemic heart disease than those whose intake averaged only 13 grams. Other research suggests that an increase in fiber may be of value in preventing other health problems such as diabetes, gallstones and varicose veins. Fiber may also help prevent constipation by pulling water into the colon. There appears to be no harm associated with increasing the daily l iber intake in adults to 30 grams.
