Show Citizen - Wednesday, March 16, 198X Page 8 AFHS Citizen of the Week : Lori Jones This week's American Fork High School Citizen of the Week "likes to dream big." Those are the words of Lorilee Jones, also known at Lori. She is the 17-year-old daughter of Robert and Noel Jones of Alpine. Lori comes right in the middle of nine children, ranging from 27 years to six years. "I like it personally," she said, referring to her position in the family. "I'm not the oldest so I don't have as much responsibility, but I'm not spoiled. I can enjoy the older kids, and still have fun with the younger." "She is actively involved in the activities at AFHS and has consistently con-sistently shown enthusiasn and responsible leadership. She is a outstanding student, in addition to her extracurricular activities," said her nomination form. In three years, Lori has taken three math classes from Scott Hendrickson and lists him among her favorite teachers, along with Mrs. Peterson for college prep English, and Lois Johnson for choir. "I love choir," she said. "A friend got me into choir, but Lois has kept me there." Lori also loves to read. Girl Scouts hold annual bakeoff Amber Jenkins, daughter of Barbara Jenkins, and a student at the Forbes School in American Fork, was declared the winner of the Third Annual Bake Off of the Girl Scouts Timpanogos Service Unit held in Pleasant Grove. Amber was one of three girls from American Fork who competed Local girl wins BYU essay contest A local sixth grade girl is $100 richer following the announcement of winners in Brigham Young University's Gerentology Dept. Essay Contest. Ruth Ann Benson, the 11-year-old daughter of Jesse and Lisa Benson of American Fork, won first prize in the 6 to 12 years category of the state-wide contest that brought in 1600 entries. Benson wrote her essay about her grandmother Edith Morley and says, "It was so exciting to write something true about Grandma Morley and have it win. Just winning the contest was more exciting than getting the money." Ruth Ann's essay will now be published in a bound copy of the top entries. She says she entered the contest entitled "How an older person or grandparent has influenced my life" because her schoolteacher had it listed as a choice for an essay assignment. New hours New program New manager Ages 2-12 New toddler program The Fun School is now open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with breakfast.. The new manager is Debra Kosmuch and she welcomes children in diapers or still potty training. The pre-school program has been changed to include the Mon-tessori Mon-tessori technique of teaching which offers an individualized program, open classrooms and increased activity. Your child will learn self-confidence, self-confidence, self-control, self-discipline, respect for others and good working habits. At their own pace, they will be taught phonics, zoology, sensorial, math, music, art visit! She played on city leagues when she was younger, but couldn't continue until this year when the school formed a girls soccer club and team. Cooking everything from cakes to chocolate chip cookies and just ' being with her family round out her favorite pastimes. Lori serves on the yearbook staff at the school, and as a junior was the copy editor. She is a section leader in the choir, helping the others learn their parts and listening for places where they need extra help. A member of National Honor Society, Lori served last year on Senator Orrin Hatch's Youth Advisory Ad-visory Committee. She called it a very interesting experience to see the compilation of results sent back to her from questionnaires the committee members completed. Lori hopes to get a job this summer sum-mer and then attend BYU in the fall. International Relations as a major would be part of her "dreaming big" she mentioned. She may also get a law degree and work for an international in-ternational business or the state with three girls from Pleasant Grove. Rachel Kesler and April Schow from American Fork, along with Karianne Aland, Ryan Wilson and Christy Bone of Pleasant Grove, all of whom were winners in earlier competition involving approximately ap-proximately 400 girls from 35 troops in northern Utah County, were the other competitors. It gives me a thrill to organize and do everything I want to do." She also noted that several of her friends focus on having good grades and they form study groups. "I want to especially thank my mom and dad. They expect the best from me, but they let me choose the areas that I want to be involved in. They help me become the person I want to be," she said. Karianne Aland .and 'April Schow were the second and third place winners. Amber represented the service unit in association finals in Provo.
