Show Citizen, Press, K(vi'w.u..., Ma v, w, l;ii i;i Richards announces candidacy for Republican leadership Susan Richards, former President of Utah County Republican Women, has announced her candidacy for vice chairman of the Utah County Republican Party. The election will take place at the county-wide convention May 9. Susan has been active in the Republican party for many years, having served as a voting district chairman, vice chairman, and administrative area vice chairman, and held several offices in Republican Women including two years as president. She has been involved in many political campaigns cam-paigns and believes she has had a wide range of experience with the political process. Professionally, she worked as director of constituent services for Congressman Howard Nielson. While in this capacity she represented the Congressman in Utah County working with mayors, j V Susan Richards city councils and organizations. Susan left Nielson's office civic to become administrative assistant to former County Commissioner Robert Warnick. She also served as the public information officer for the Utah State House of Representatives. She is presently working at Novell in marketing of the Netware Services Division. Richards feels the Republican party has enjoyed success in the county in the past several years, but, "with the tough decisions that faced the legislature this session the party will need to become more cohesive." She said this can be accomplished by spending more time identifying and training good candidates and helping them financially. "I would like to help cement the party," she added. Susan was educated at BYU and she resides in American Fork with her husband, Guy E. Richards and four children. Pageant receives Arts Grant The Utah Arts Council has awarded a greant of $3,600 to the Utah Pageant of the Arts to support its 1987-88 activities. The grant will support community activities sponsored by the Pageant, including: -Modern dance workshops in June 1988; -Art seminars during the run of the Pageant, June-July 1988; -A professional art exhibit and a juried youth art exhibit to be shown during the 1988 Pageant; -A "Messiah" production during December 1987; --A major theater production ; -Other concerts by the Pageant Chamber Orchestra throughout the year and several concerts by the Pageant's Youth Orchestra. In all, the Utah Arts Council Board of Directors on April 16 awarded $838,500 in grants to 96 non-profit organizations statewide to help fund arts projects during fiscal year 1987-88. Later this year, the Council will award another $58,200 in community com-munity outreach grants to first-time Garth Fisher to open A.F. Hospital Week On Monday, May 11, at 1 p.m., Garth Fisher, BYU professor and fitness expert, will kick off Hospital Week at American Fork Hospital. Monday has been set aside as Senior Celebration Day at the hospital, and therefore his lecture will be entitled, "Fit After Fifty." Other Senior Citizen functions have been scheduled for that day. Free gifts and surprises will be given to all participants. A series of free screenings will be held from 2 to 4:30 p.m.: blood pressure checks, hearing screenings, blood glucose monitoring (for best results, last four hours beforehand) and respiratory screenings. Also, from 2 to 4:30 p.m.. American Fork Hospital will be holding free clinics: foot clinic, prescription counseling and insuranceMedicare in-suranceMedicare counseling. That total figure represents an 8.7 percent decrease over last year's grants funding, due to a budget cut during the last legislative session. Fiscal year 1986-87 grants funding totaled $977,805. awared to 135 nonprofit groups that sponsor arts events. "Deciding where to allocate fewer grant dollars to groups already feeling the pinch of the state's economic slump was very painful lor the Council." said Executive Director Carol Nixon. Foxy Lady Fun Run this Saturday The Women s Center at American Fork Hospital is once again sponsoring spon-soring the 3rd Annual Foxy Lady 5K Fun Run, to be held Saturday, May 9. at 9 a.m. Women of all ages are invited to participate.
