Show Citizen, Press, Review, Wed., August 7, 1985 - Page 20 Brazilian sculptor to teach renowned technique at BYU ANNIVERSARY SALE Our 1st year we'd like to say L.l. v i' i Mauro Possabon works on sculpture of Christ. Mauro Possobon. a Brasilian sculptor now residing in Frovo. has perfected a new technique in sculpturing - one, he says cuts the time of doing a selection in half. Mr. Possobon. who began sculpturing when he was seven years old and won his first award at nine, says he is self-taught. He is noted for his surrealism as well as his portrait pieces. In describing his method of sculpting, he explains he doesn't use an armature as a base for his pieces, regardless of the size. "Using an armature is a waste of time," he exclaims, using his hands to show how he works the clay, intertwining in-tertwining it so there is no "air pockets." "If there are no air pockets, then the clay won't break and you don't need an armature," he said. "I can make sculpture pieces 6 to 10 feet high or more without an armature and do it in half the time others do it," he says. Although he speaks Italian, Portugese and Spanish, Mr. Possobon doesn't speak English, however much of what he says is visible through his hand movements, and facial expressions. The 27-year-old artist - he was born in 1958 in Brasil -prefers working in Italy - "in Florence which is the Center of Art." When he went there to study however he was asked to teach them his technique instead. Before coming to the United State he was in London, England, for five months where he sculpted several pieces for the Visitors Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and for the Brigham Young University center there, including a full size piece depicting Moroni, and portraits of the church prophets and of students attending the center. He has sculpted portraits of each of the Presidents of the LDS Church as well as of Christ. He has also sculpted pieces for the Catholic Church, including Mary and the baby Jesus. Mr. Possobon also sculpts "family portraits," using a family group photo to sculpt the heads of family members in one piece, much the same way as they appear in the group shot. He says his real love and talent is in surrealism because "that comes from the heart" and "expresses how you feel within," buthe has found his "copies" - portrait pieces - the most profitable. Since coming to Utah, he hasn't done much surrealism, he says, but may do some to see how it is accepted. ac-cepted. In addition to his clay pieces, he has several pieces in marble and in bronze. He will be teaching his sculpting technique at BYU this fall and plans to return to Italy in December. He and his wife Carmen, who is also a sculptor, are getting homesick for Florence, he says. They are the parents of two daughters. The talented artist attended the Federal University of Santa Maria in Brasil, the Institute of Park Lagend Rio de Janeiro, and the Art Institute of Florence, Italy. He has participated in many personal and collective shows in New York, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Maria, Bologna, Milano, Florence, etc., and received awards and recognition for his work. In addition he has been written up by several authors for his technique. 'A View to a KilP is view of entertainment By SHARON MORREY Now, I'm not your dyed-in-the-wool James Bond fan and the only reason I went to see "A View to a Kill" was because it just cost a dollar. Oh yes. and because my husband is a Bond fan from way back. But I was surprised at the value of entertainment I got. I enjoyed the movie immensely, from the ridiculously predictable skiing scene that opened the show to the demise of the psychopathic villian. (At least it appeared that he was "done in." One can never be sure until the sequel. The stuntmen doing the jump skiing were incredible and even though it is just laughable to expect Bond to ( 1. ) leap into a crevasse that is actually a ski run off the mountain, moun-tain, (2.) hook into the snow just before he needs a snowmobile for himself and ( 3. ) find a surfer ski just after he lands on his head in a drift, it is just that, laughable and fun. I didn't even mind that he made it all the way down mountains and cliffs with the tiny microchip in hand and stepped away into an iceberg that was actually a sub waiting for him. I just sat back and enjoyed the spoof -- and the entertainment, the trappings of the enormously rich and beautiful. I even liked the bad guys. Mayday is a gorgeous black that turns up like the proverbial black cat, in your path whenever you don't need it. Zoran was deceptively harmless looking and had a cheesy grin that almost made you like him. And he was fairly brilliant in his madness. Bond just barely outwitted him. I almost had to worry. This Bond movie is remarkable, the graphics and the photography are exciting. The violence is appreciatively ap-preciatively understated. No one has to witness too much crunch and blood. I thought Bond himself was a little more compassionate that I've seen him in other flicks. He waited for the damsels he was to rescue and seemed saddened by the loss of his friend and "valet." I don't remember Bond caring much in earlier movies. I recommend you see it. Teenagers and some pre-teens would like it too, although I would see it first if your child catches on to innuendo very fast. Go for fun, adventure, the excitement ex-citement of the chase. I think you'll like it if you just won't take it seriously.
