The name American Fork gave the day turned out to be prophetic but for a different reason. The game had to be declared a 30-30 30-30 tie after three overtimes because of darkness. The officials had the contest called after the third overtime rather than continue play at the risk of seriously injuring players. The decision did not sit well with American Fork's players and fans. As soon as American Fork Principal Prin-cipal Wayne Reid announced on a bullhorn that the game was declared a tie, players grumbled and many fans jeered. Amid the scene of anger arose a fact not very many people gave thought to: American Fork had disproved the prediction by the dailies that West would win. By the ' way the first half went, though, the In view of this week's overtime tie against West, American Fork High School officials have moved up the starting time to 4 p.m. for Caveman games previously scheduled for 5 p.m. The schedule change will be in effect the rest of the season. Tennis team does The Provo Bulldogs overwhelmed the American Fork Cavewomen's tennis team 4-1 at American Fork High Thursday afternoon. The only Cavewoman to emerge victorious from the meet was Jennifer Olsen, who defeated Mary Hales 6-4, 5-7, and 7-6 in the singles la Ja 10w-40 n 12 QtS. State Ri, 225-9S37 Panthers appeared certain of proving those predictions right. In the game's first two quarters, neither team's ofense performed well. During the first minutes of the opening quarter, for example, West tried capitalizing on an American Fork facemasking call in the first kickoff. But when the Panthers drove to American Fork's 15, they fumbled the ball, which Chad Robinson recovered. The Panther's stingy defense did not let American Fork penetrate their territory on the first Caveman march, even though quarterback Robinson fired a 25-yard pass to split end David Smith. So strong was the two team's defense that there was no scoring until the second quarter. Early in that period, Robinson threw a 20-yard 20-yard pass to Smith to put American Fork inside West territory for the first time. But on the next play, Panther defensive back Jeff Takanaka intercepted a Robinson pass. The Red Curtain enabled the Cavemen to get the ball back in a competition. Olsen's teammates Alison Ford and Julie Saunders were defeated by Margret Lindsay and Becky Watts respectively. Panther quarterback Robert Haslam got the attack going with a 45-yard bomb to Takanaka to put West on the American Fork 11. Two plays later, Tananaka took the ball into the end zone on a one-yard run. Travis Hansen blocked the successful suc-cessful drive by blocking Panther Brian Leafs PAT kick. West got revenge for that defense play a little more than a minute later. Right after American Fork was called for clipping, Panther Darryl Barnes scored on a 13-yard interception in-terception return, and Leaf frosted the touchdown with a.PAT. Keeping the Cavemen in the hole, West came close to scoring a third time in the period; however, the Red Curtain smothered the attack by nailing West tight end Morrie Talbot on the American Fork 30. Big Robinson passes to Smith and J.R. Martin put the Cavemen up to the West 18, but they couldn't score, because their quarterback was sacked twice. its stuff Carol Burr and Sandy S taker 6-4 and 6-1. On a fourth down play in the Cavemen's second series of the third period, Smith caught a 10-yard pass on the West 26 to keep the offensive alive long enough for Hansen to score a touchdown at 5:17. West prevented American Fork from making a two-point two-point conversion. Several minutes later, Talbot punched Caveman Chris Conners. The Panther was ejected from the game, and his team was penalized 15 yards. Capitalizing on that West mistake, Robinson fired a 23-yard pass to Martin for a touchdown, which was capped by Steve McGhie's extra point kick. West blew two chances in the final period to break the 13-13 tie. The first chance went up in smoke when a Panther touchdown was called back by an offsides penalty. The second chance was lost when David Christensen recovered a Panther fumble resulting from Steve Davis' sacking Haslam on the American Fork 25. In the first play of the first overtime, Robinson threw to Martin for a touchdown, capped by a McGhie kick. Right after that, Panther Cole Goodsell caught a touchdown pass, and Leaf kicked an extra point to tie the game at 20. In the second overtime, McGhie and Leaf each kicked a field goal on fourth down plays. Caveman Doug Mower fell as he caught a Robinson pass in the end zone on the second play of the third overtime. The catch was voided, but an appeal from the American Fork bench caused the touchdown to be declared good. After McGhie kicked an extra point, American Fork kept West from getting into the end zone on the first three plays. However, Takanaka caught a 5-yard touchdown touch-down pass on the fourth down, and a Leaf PAT knotted the game at 30. In football action Thursday, American Fork's jayvees and sophomores beat West. The jayvee Cavemen won 7-0 at West, and their sophomore brothers won 39-0. downed West defensive In the jayvee game at West, Caveman quarterback Todd Glover fired a 15-yard pass to Jeff Frier for the game's only touchdown on the last play of the first half. Injured Caveman Rusty Phelps scored the game's first touchdown in the first quarter, . then American Fork quarterback Matt Lamb made the next one on a keeper. Lamb handed off to Troy Hales for a two-point conversion. The quarterback scored a touchdown in the second period, and teammate Daren Warnick scored one himself on an 80-yard return of the next half's opening kickoff.
