Show Citizen - Thursday, September 30, 1982 - Page 2 Program gives seniors chance to reach out Senior citizens in Utah County are invited to share of themselves to make others happy - to reach out and touch someone with love, while gaining new meaning and interest in their own lives. Through a newly initiated "Golden "Gold-en Friend" program at the Utah State Training School, the senior citizens may serve as "grandma's and grandpa's" to the schools' residents, and provide them with the "love and attention they need," said Lynda Hiatt, Director of Voluntary Community Services at the school. The program supplements the Foster Grandparent program which has been a success at the school for the past several years, said Leonard La vis, school superintendent. "Our senior friends have provided our residents with much needed love and care over the past years," Lavis said. "We would simply like to increase the number of Senior-Friend involvement at the school." Supt. Lavis praised the Foster Grandparent Program, saying "The success of that program is evidenced in the happiness on the faces of our residents as their Grandpa or Grandma come to see them." Limited federal funds prevents a needed increase in the Foster Grandparent Program, however, so the training school is starting the Golden Friend program to meet the needs of the resident, Dean Jones, director of staff and career development develop-ment at the school said. "The Golden Friend Program can involve senior citizens from every area in Utah County," Mr. Jones said, continuing, "In a role of 'grandma or grandpa', the Golden Friends can provide loving nurturing care for Utah State Training School young men and women through daily or weekly involvement, not only enhancing the lives of the residents, but also the volunteer's life as well." Mrs. Hiatt said the grandmas and grandpas can be involved in activities such as assisting staff members in direct care responsibilities respon-sibilities such as feeding, dressing, combing their hair and similar activities; serving as an aide to speech therapists, teachers, recreational recre-ational therapists, in the 4-H program, physical therapists and occupational therapists; or simply becoming a "golden friend" to the mentally handicapped at the school. Anyone interested in serving in the program should contact Mrs. Hiatt or Mrs. Jeannie Blackburn, training school volunteer coordinator, coor-dinator, at the school They are also available for public speaking engagements to clubs and organizations with members 55 years and older. "Any Senior Citizen in Utah is invited to participate in this new Golden Friend program," Mrs. Blackburn noted. Further information may be obtained by contacting Mrs. Hiatt or Mrs. Blackburn at 756-6022, exts. 315 or 331. Nursing home (Continued from page 1) the best nursing home. You're guaranteed 90 percent capacity for just building one. It's not really a good business practice." Beck notes that in searching out rest homes recently for a family member he found four of six that "I wouldn't ever go back to for anything. And the one that is maintained well . has a waiting' list. There are no empty beds there." Because of the laws presently in effect in Utah, Beck says the poorly run homes keep an 88 percent capacity with nowhere else for patients to be housed. Federal funds have been cut for the certificate of need committees and Beck says if the state elects not to pick up their $1.5 million tab, the committees could come to sudden death in June. "A lot of committee members themselves are going to suggest that the legislators do just that, allow it to go unfunded, because they can see what a unwieldly process it is,1' says Beck. Beck suggests that if BHS cannot foresee getting the 60 bed clearance they want by Oct. 20, they may amend their proposal to ask for only half that number. With 30 Medicare beds and 10 to 15 private ones, the project could still be cost effective, according to the Mayor. Demos meet (Continued from page 1) in Utah alone for the coming election," elec-tion," pointing out that that is the number of the state's unemployed. Several of the speakers took issue with the recent redistribution of legislative districts in the state, which left American Fork split between more than one representative in both houses and sharing representatives and senators with other cities. "We have never been without represntation, and now we are in danger of being fragmented by the district," said American Fork Mayor Malcom Beck. Following the breakfast, Matheson, Huish, Dean and Swan made a visit to the State Training School and American Fork Junior High, before the Governor headed back to ealt Lake City and the affairs of the state. Council condemns Mt. Fuel move "GOLDEN FRIEND" program gives senior citizens a chance to reach out to Training School residents. By SHARON MORREY The American Fork City Council formally condemned the closure of Mountain Fuel Supply's office on 100 East and called the company's intentions in-tentions "a great inconvenience" to one of Utah County's fastest growing communities. A resolution introduced by Mayor Malcolm Beck at the Sept. 14 Council meeting had been held in abeyance until it could appear on the public agenda. Beck has called the move one that will confuse and upset townspeople and take away their opportunity to get help when it is needed. "You lose that personal touch. Someone listening over the phone in Provo is not going to care about your problem like he would if he is there, face to face with you," says Beck. The city resolution opposing the fuel supply company's plan points out that the office has been in American Fork for over 36 years now and 48 percent of the customers in American Fork pay their bills in person to that office. "It isn't just 15 percent like the national average is," "says Mayor Beck. The condemnation resolution passed unanimously with Councilman Kent Evans and Steve Sowby absent. on a dream vacation ft ft ftfTl ff mi Mmmmmms The glittering azure waters of the Caribbean as seen from aboard a Princess Cruise ship.
