A The Truth About Thatch Thatch is an accumulation of tightly meshed dead and living stems and roots that builds up between the zone of green vegetation and the soil surface. Thatch is not a dirty word! An accumulation of less than Vi inch is beneficial to the lawn. It increases wear tolerance and -protects the plant from extreme temperature tem-perature and drought. Only when the thatch accumulates to Vi inch or more, can problems start to occur. Thatch control is not required on all lawns every year. Power aking can do alot more harm than good if it is unncessary. So measure the thatch first!
