Show Pageant Artistry Transforms Ordinary To Pure Magic The You wouldn't think by taking the ordinary, every day person, putting them in make-up and costume, and placing them inside a painting, you could create magic - but that is exactly what happens at American Fork's Utah Pageant of the Arts. Now in its 10th season, the Pageant each year creates magic through the use of reproductions of famous paintings and sculptures, volunteers and special lighting techniques. The Pageant opened June 7 and will run through July 16 for an unprecedented 34 performances. Curtain time is 8 p.m. each evening except Sundays and July 5 at the American Fork High School. Professional and youth art exhibits run concurrently con-currently and can be viewed before and after each Pageant performance. Tickets for the Pageant are available at the Utah Pageant of the Arts-office, 54 East Main, between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. except Sundays and holidays. They sell for $7 for the center section or $5 for side seats. From the opening sculpture of Mario Moschi's "Protection" to the closing selection, Michelangelo's "LaPieta," and "Christ in Gethesemane" by Henrich Hofmann, the living reproductions capture the minds and the hearts of Pageant goers. , . This year's production is a "Command Performance," Per-formance," said Pageant Co-directors Bill Kirk-patrick Kirk-patrick and David 0. Brockbank. This means the paintings and sculpture pieces more requested by past audiences are presented once again for their enjoyment. Among these are the always favorite "Tom Sawyer," "Barbershop Quartet" and "Doctor and Doll" by Norman Rockwell; the Freedom Tribute, including the "Raising the Flag on low Jima," by Felix de Weldon; and Archibald M. Willards' "The Spirit of T6." There is the beauty of the Stained Glass Window from St. 'Marks Cathedral; and the always popular "Hummel Collection," and the delicacy of the Dresden pieces of "The Family", the "Vienna Waltz" and "Minute." Gainsboroughs "Blue Boy" and "Pinkie" are reproduced as a Couplet; and the beauty of Steuben glass is viewed in "Orpheus" by George Thompson and Tom Vincent. A total of 23 scenes are featured with 44 selections presented during the two hour show. The Pageant is a study in illusion, and has been described by some as an "action packed as meditation time in a monastery." This is the beauty of it as the "actors " are required to strike stiff poses and remain motionless for up to two minutes in time as they take the place of "characters" in a painting or sculpture. (Could you do this?) Although this sounds dull, it isn't, for special lighting helps create the illusion the viewer is seeing a large reproduction of artistic works of the Old Masters or well-known statuary. In one scene, just to make sure the audience knows real people are taking part, the volunteers in the scene step down from the set - after the audience has seen it with lights and full effects. Many people who don't like - or understand - art and would never visit an art gallery come back to the Pageant every year. 'V - ' '" i , "Here I can not only see the painting reproduced but can learn something about the artist and about the painting itself," said one such person who has Hospital Volunteers Meet "You, the citizen, are the. vita' first link in restoring a heart that is too good to die." That was the final statement ending a film about CPR which was seen by the Volunteers of the American Fork Hospital at the meeting on June 14. The film was presented by Dr. Jerry R. Martin, of the hospital staff. Pink ladies were cautioned ! , that one never knows when a patient you might be transporting will collapse. "When you have a patient in trouble, you don't run for help," Dr. Martin stated "you breath for him." Carina College, auxiliary president, conducted the meeting which was attended by 16 members. A nominating nom-inating committee to work with past President Melissa Robinson was selected. Avis West and Twila Johnson will be asked to take these positions. pa June 15-21 , All depositors insured to $100,000 MONEY MARKET CERTIORATES . $10,0GDDeposit , for six months , earns 12.753 Vh YEAR SAVING CERTIFICATE 30 month Certificate $1000 minimum deposit earns 13.50 FcdwM rgutliont pfOh compounding of mWfWI during th. wrm Ollfdpo. Music and narration are very much a part of the production with the narrator telling of the selection and artist, and the music putting you in the "mood." Families involved in the production chat about styles of art and pieces in particular because of the Pageant. That alone is a fine reward for the production, said Mr. Kirkpatrick, who does the artwork for all the scenes. Work on the production is a year-long community effort. Hundreds of people from throughout Utah tryout for parts with age four being the youngest chosen and those in their early 80's the oldest. The Pageant is triple cast, with each cast serving ten nights. There are also alternates to fill in in case of sickness or other emergency, said Tamara Allman, casting director. Over 30,000 people from 13 states and several foreign countries viewed the production last year. More are expected this year with a longer run than ever before. Many performances are already sold out - so if you plan to attend, you better see about your tickets now. The Pageant is produced each year by the nonprofit non-profit Utah Pageant of the Arts board of directors. , r-JLr ,A t I 1 X f OPEN HOUSt for Cami Lee and Clint Fielding, children of Garth and Ruby Fielding.
