Items that are reduced because of looming sell-by dates may require a bit more scrutiny, but they can still be great purchases pur-chases with significant savings on the grocery bill. Baked goods such as breads, pies, cookies, cakes and muffins muf-fins are often reduced as a store's bakery produces fresher items. Yet these day old items are not in any way inferior and the only thing they don't live up to in comparison with their replacements is the price. I frequently purchase reduced loaves of French bread for hoagies, garlic toast or dipping dip-ping into soup, and both my sweet tooth and my budget are appeased by reduced cakes or cookies. Being a slightly obsessive fan who seriously considered "Star Wars" to be the crowning transcendental achievement of humankind, this elicited no small amount of awe and interest. Could it be true? Could the greatest movie with the greatest story ever made actually have an origin outside of the cosmic genius of George Lucas's mind? The answer an-swer was, of course, yes, and the film in question was "Hidden "Hid-den Fortress" by acclaimed Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. My friends and I were aofiit&jUaj video store (how tunes have changed) and, as the saying goes, never looked back. "Hidden Fortress" takes place in 16th century feudal Japan, when a pair of bumbling bum-bling and scheming peasants aid Princess Yuki and General Makabe in traveling from their Need Some Extra CASH? Clearance racks in grocery stores are nothing to be afraid or ashamed of. Trying to dodge enemy swordsmen while also smuggling smug-gling a horde of gold in bundles bun-dles of sticks, the small band must outsmart their pursuers, as well as each other, in order to make it to safety. This sounds like a fairly straightforward adventure story, but it was primed to inspire for years after the 1958 production and release. To say that watching Kurosawa's film changed the way that I approach cinema would be to grossly understate the experience. ex-perience. Until that point, my knowledge of cinema was limited lim-ited to what was given a wide U.S. release and currently showing in local theaters or playing on one of the major network television channels. Needless to say, my scope was narrow and I had marginalized the last hundred years or so of film history. "Hidden Fortress" had effectively opened the gate to a whole world of films that were no longer hidden to me. Since that time, I've managed man-aged to see nearly all of Kurosawa's Kuro-sawa's films (a good portion of them several times) and am not ashamed to say that "Hidden Fortress" is not my favorite ("Throne of Blood"), nor do I think it is his best ("Ran"). But since it introduced me to one of my favorite filmmakers and to foreign language films in general, I always try to drop it WHEN YOU HIRE JUST TURN OUT Educated Licensed Tested Trained Better Price & Better Service Than National Is your tax preparer really qualified? This is, in no small part, because Kurosawa's influence influ-ence doesn't end with the Star Wars films. He also clearly influenced Hayao Miyazaki's anime masterpiece "Princess Mononoke," and it is impossible impos-sible to overlook his mark on other influential works such as "The Magnificent Seven" (influenced by Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai"), "A Fistful of Dollars" ("Yojimbo"), "The Outrage" ("Rashamon"), and "Ransom" ("High and Low"). I still enjoy watching "Star Wars." But now, when I watch it or any other movie, I keep my mind open for influences and references that will lead me to my next "favorite" film. For me and for other cine-philes, cine-philes, finding the next great movie is usually dependant on understanding the larger context of movies in general. That is to say, appreciation of the new is often relative to our knowledge of the old, and vice versa.
