I i ASHLEY FRANSCELLDaily Herald Julie Thornton, ICU director at Timpanogos Regional Hospital, shows off a new room in the 1CU on Jan. 28 in Orem. The hospitul's expansion increased capacity from 6'S to 105 beds and space in the ICU and critical care unit. The ICU rooms will also have new safety features, including an Altaris Pump which delivers medications and helps to eliminate human error. Timpanogos Regional opens two-floor expansion Ace Stryker DAILY HERALD Timpanogos Regional Hospital Hospi-tal in Orem officially opened its two-floor expansion, and the beds are already almost full.' The third and fourth floors, which have been under construction con-struction over the past three years, bring an additional 37 beds to the hospital, raising the total to 105. That includes a doubling of the intensive care unit to 20 beds. But there won't be any time for the community to grow into the new space, said Chief Operating Officer Kimball Anderson because they're already there. "The interesting thing is since we switched everything over, we've been at capacity," he said. "We need this one. We need this one bad." Patients have been moving into the new space in stages starting back in August, Anderson An-derson said. He said he hopes the expansion will prevent the facility from having to go "on diversion" referring patients to other hospitals because there are no open beds. "This will allow us to keep more of the patients here," he said. Those patients will also enjoy a host of technological advances, from automatic pumps to instructional videos on in-room TVs with titles like "You've Just Been Told You Have Cancer" and "Recovering "Recover-ing From Heart Surgery." Hospital staff will have intercom inter-com devices hung around their necks and state-of-the-art class rooms in which to be trained. Julie Thornton, director of the ICU, said she's optimistic the new technology will help give patients the care they might have gone to Salt Lake City for before. She said it's all part of a movement to "take care of the community here." "For us to be able to grow in Utah County, we needed the room to be able to do that," she said. "It's to give Utah County options." Anderson proudly pointed out that patients will be resting on new memory foam mattresses, mat-tresses, too. "Patients' safety and comfort are, I think, the two biggest attitudes at-titudes of the way the hospital was expanded," he said. The $33 million project included in-cluded a total expansion of 54,4(51 square feet and renovation renova-tion of another 29,600 square feet. But the work is not yet done: Administrators are discussing dis-cussing another expansion to the neonatal intensive care unit, Anderson said. The NICU already has taken over other space once before in the hospital hospi-tal to make room for demand. Kari Wood, a neonatal nurse practitioner, said her unit is making do in the existing exist-ing space, but could easily use more room. "We do feel like we keep up very nicely," she said. A public open house of the new expansion Ls scheduled from 1 1 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Satur-day. I Ace Stryker can be reached at 344-2556. INWJtS, 10 Days or LESS . . .
