I've nev er been able to understand un-derstand exactly why, but one of my favorite movie genres is war films. I always played with green army soldiers and G.I. Joe action figures as a kid and loved to play war games with my neighborhood pals in the expansive woods behind our house. Though I never served in the armed forces. I have a deep respect for those who have. Joseph Vilsmaier's World War II tale (in German with subtitles) of a German Heer unit that gets sent to the Eastern Front and experiences pure hell on earth Not for the faint of heart. 8"Braveheart"(1995) Mel Gibson's epic about Scottish warrior William Wil-liam Wallace s struggle to unite 13th century clans to overthrow and cast out the English armies that oppress them. Brutal battle scenes, great sound track, and amazing amaz-ing cinematography. 7 "Empire of the Sun (197) Steve Spielberg's Spiel-berg's under-appreciated look at a young British boy's struggle strug-gle to survive when the Japanese Japa-nese armies invade Shanghai during World War II. A very poetic presentation. 6 "Plat oon" ( 1986) Oliver Oli-ver Stone's "piece de resistance" about a squad of American soldiers fighting the enemy and each ether in the jungles of Vietnam. In one of the most powerful moments I ve ev er seen on film, WiDem Dafoe's character goes down as the chopper lifts off as we hear the piercing strains of Samuel Barber's Adaggk for Strings. 5 "Black Hawk Down" (2001) A not-small group of elite UJS. Low recalls hearing that a study had recently been conducted that found striking similarities to people actually going through an experience and others reading read-ing about those experiences. She said reading or storytelling may be one of the best ways to learn about history. "It's clear for the brain scans that reading or going through the story of it. are almost as true vicarious experiences as going through the actions and living it yourself." Low said "We have to know more than the facts. It's the human effect ef-fect that can only be told with story." In Japanese with English subtitles. Nominated for Best Picture. 3 "Downfall" (2004) "Der Untergang" in the original German it was shot in. it realistically depicts the final days of Adotph Hitler and other oth-er German officials and their families in the bunker as the Red Army steadily advances on Berlin. Bruno Ganz is brilliant bril-liant as der Fuhrer. 2 "The Thin Red line" (1998) -Amazingly subtle considering its all-star cast. Terrence Malick's film tells the story of Qs battle to take Guadalcanal in the Pacific Pa-cific as they battle their inner demons. I love the ethereal dreamlike feel of this one. Nominated for seven Oscars. 1 "Saving Private Rvan" (1998) An instant classic, Spielberg's fictional story about an American unit that been ravaged by storming the beaches as Norrnandv on DDay is tasked to go behind enemy lines to find a paratrooper para-trooper whose three brothers have all been killed in action. From the opening carnage on the beaches to the final stand against the advancing German armor, this one is a thriller. Mkfcad Rigert is the editor of the Orem TCmes. He can be reached for comment at |
