Finally, just as it was getting get-ting dusk, she went to the outhouse. out-house. When she opened the door, I said into the speaker, "Mom, there's just not enough room in here for both of us!" She came flying out of there. Before I could say anything, any-thing, she knew what was up. She wasn't dumb. When I came out from behind the tree, we both had a good laugh. She had a great sense of humor. So 1 was very young when I became interested in electronics. electron-ics. I graduated from high school at age 17 and waited until I was about 18 to enter the military. I didn't want to be inducted into. the Army and shoot people, so I volunteered for the Navy. I was givgn an IQ test and other tests, after which I was asked, "What would you like to do in the Navy?" That was kind of interesting: in-teresting: three officers asked me what I wanted to do in the Navy. I guess my IQ was the highest they'd ever measured. (My brother Dean had the same experience when he was tested for the Marines. When I was asked by someone what I thought of that, I replied, "Not very much. The Marines were never noted for their brains." I was joking of course, but the person who asked me that really re-ally cracked up. I had actually scored a little higher than my brother, and that always bothered both-ered him for him to think he was "inferior" to me.) I chose electronics and was sent to a new program started and named after Captain Wm. C. Eddy, who had written the "Eddy Test." This was in 1943, just as the war was turning in the favor of the U.S. I was trained to become a "radio technician," a group different from the "radio men," who did other stuff. Our responsibility was all the "electronic" "elec-tronic" equipment on the ship (though the word "electronic" wasn't used yet). I trained in Michigan City, Indiana, and then later at the Utah State Agricultural College Col-lege in Logan. It was an interesting inter-esting time at USAC.
