NEWS AND IDEAS Scera Park celebrates Ribbon Week Melissaflayntz Because it is after the holidays holi-days but before the spring rush, January Ls traditionally a slow month for elementary schools. Scera Park Elementary was anything but slow last week, however, as the school celebrated cele-brated Ribbon Week by raising awareness about many issues facing young students today. Most schools coordinate different dif-ferent ribbon weeks in the fall - Red Ribbon Week to study the dangers of drugs, Green Ribbon Week to stress safety concerns and so forth. .Scera Park decided to postpone the awareness weeks until January, Janu-ary, however, because the first few months of the school year are already filled with activities, activi-ties, including Back to School night, book fairs, parent conferences, con-ferences, the annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest and other events. ' We usually don't have anything any-thing in the month of January." Debi Lee, the school's PTA President, said. Lee also said that Scera Park MM l? SJ I'll 1 FROM CLASSROOMS AND EDUCATORS originally got the idea for a single awareness week from Foothill Elementary, but has adapted the concept to fit with their schedule. January was also chosen because there are no conferences, standardized tests or other crucial school events during that time, so Ribbon Week would not be a distraction. To start the week off with enthusiasm, Monday was School Spirit Day. Tuesday was Green Ribbon Day for safety awareness, followed by Wednesday's Red Ribbon Day to alert students to the dangers of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Thursday and Friday were designated Gold Ribbon Days to emphasize healthy Irving choices, such as eating right and getting plenty of exercise. Each day included several themed activities to reinforce important concepts. On Red Ribbon Day, for example, students were encouraged to dress in as much red clothing as possible to show their support, sup-port, including crazy socks to "sock it to drugs." "We're making it fun and exciting but at the same time we're slipping in the ideas they need to learn," Krista Tate, the school's Red Ribbon Coordinator, Coordina-tor, said. Other activities during the week included dressing all in green on Tuesday, adding art to a graffiti wall to show their commitment to awareness and running laps on the playground play-ground to stress healthy living and exercise. Assemblies were held with different special guests during the week, and students were given treats for their participation in the various vari-ous activities. By coordinating all the awareness activities into one week, the PTA has also been able to take advantage of the generous contributions of volunteers without stretching anyone too far. Lee estimates that nearly 30 parents and other volunteers helped with activities throughout the week, making it much easier to arrange ar-range multiple activities. Tate agrees, and also said that by combining different weeks into one, each activity helps to reinforce the awareness aware-ness issues of other events throughout the week. "They're all trying to accomplish accom-plish a similar goal," Tate said. For Tate,' the best part of the week is seeing students' enthusiasm and knowing that they're establishing a foundation founda-tion for a healthy lifestyle. "It's a fun week," she said. "The kids love having these activities." While Ribbon Week may emphasize awareness issues in creative ways, Lee said that Scera Park strives to be a positive posi-tive learning environment and to keep students safe and drug-free drug-free all year, and volunteers are always welcome to help make that positive impact on students' lives. "Everybody's always welcome, wel-come, PTA or not, to help out at the school," she said. c.JC)8iW.V .ft haunt's W diners Center Cet a Hatter Stomach 4 Meadow SLEEPY RIDGE West Orem I Orem High School Mr. Orem Pageant The Mr. Orem pageant is Friday at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium. audito-rium.
