The following safety tips for children and parents from the American Hed Cross and American Academy of Pediatrics Pedi-atrics will help ensure that all children have a safe and fun Halloween. I Walk, slither and sneak on sidewalks, not in the street. t 1 ,00k both ways before (Tossing the street to check lor cars, trucks and low-flying brooms. I Cross the street only at corners. Don't hide or cross the street between parked cars. I Wear light -colored or reflective-type clothing so you are more visible. Add reflective reflec-tive tape: to dark costumes. Iut reflective t;ix- on bikes, skateboards and brooms, too! I Han your route and share it with your family An adult should accompany children under ten. I Carry a flashlight to light your way. I Keep away from open fires and candles. (Costumes can be extremely flammable.) I Visit only homes that have the porch light on. I Accept your treats at the dxr and never go into a stranger's house. I Use face paint rather than masks, large hats or things that will cover your eyes. Have a grown-up inspect treats before eating. Don't eat candy if the package Ls already opened. Small, hard pieces of candy are a choking hazard for young children. I Serve children a healthy meal before they go trick -or-treating so they won't fill up on candy. Remove things that children chil-dren could trip over as they come to your home hoses, bikes, toys and lawn decorations. decora-tions. Clear away wet leaves, as they can be slippery. Offer trick -or-treaters something other than candy such as colorful pencils, stickers or erasers. WWW? The harvest season is the perfect time to celebrate this kernel of fun, goodness and yes, it can even be healthy. Americans consume some 17 billion quarts of this naturally fun treat. That's 54 quarts per man, woman and child. Now, I beg to differ a bit on this statistic. I believe that the 54 quarts of popcorn I am supposed sup-posed to be consuming in one year does not even come close to reality. My husband makes up for the difference of what I do not eat. He loves popcorn. Especially at the movie theater. I have often wondered why they do not offer different flavors fla-vors of popcorn at the movie theater. I think I would attend the movies more often if I could eat popcorn there. I am not a lover of popcorn with salt and butter. Now offer of-fer me caramel, cheese or marshmallow popcorn and I may take you up on the offer. I also would like a small toothpick tooth-pick attached to the side of my popcorn bag for the after effects that popcorn brings. Maybe someone has thought of this idea already, and it is a little slow getting to Utah. If no( there is a million dollar idea lifting to "pop!" j.ipopcorn explodes with flavor whether eaten plati or with your, favorite sweetfbr spfty topping. Popcorn is a , whole grain, which makeSflt .a ood-f or-you" food, scfyou calf munch away guilt-free (if you" loose the salt, butter, and sweet sugar that can be added to your treat). There's also a little bit of magic in every kernel of popcorn. pop-corn. Popcorn delights young and old alike as it dances and sings in a sizzling pan of oil or microwave oven. And the aroma! One smell of this tantalizing tan-talizing treat triggers hunger pangs you didn't even know existed. Popcorn is a great healthy "pick me up" snack, or a treat that can be full of guilt with every bite you take. Marshmallow Popcorn Mix together in a large bowl 16 cups popped popcorn 1 3 cups mini marshmallows In a saucepan melt 2 squares margarine Add 1 1-13 cups sugar ft 12 cup light corn syrup Bring to a boil stirring constantly. Simmer for 3 minutes stirring occasionally. Add 1 1 tsp vanilla " I Add food coloring if you desire. I Stir well. Pour over popcorn. I Cool on waxed paper or parchment paper. This week's recipe may be filled with a bit of guilt every time you take a bite. But with the holidays approaching, guilt will consume or lives anyy. So enjoy it while you can! i Share the fun with your family fam-ily and friends by popping up a batch of this yummy snack, pass it out to those you care for and with Halloween ap proaching add a bit of orange food coloring for a festive flare! Until next week ... I will look forward to haying a baby, or simply having a little more batter chatter with you. Do you have a holiday recipe you are willing to share?
