I learned later of one fellow whose ship had gone down, and he had been sent to Far-ragut Far-ragut Naval Training Station to recuperate. This officer got hold of him and scared him so bad he had a nervous breakdown. break-down. The base commander immediately broke this officer to apprentice seaman, the lowest rank in the Navy. We knew what kind of treatment he would now receive because of all the fun things he had thought to do to others. Johnny Herlevitch was a large man, all muscles, who used to play football for Denver Den-ver University. 1 had fun leasing leas-ing him about fighting him because I thought it was obvious obvi-ous that me, because I weighed only 145 pounds, that he, weighing over 200, wouldn't take it seriously. Then one day when I was at the barracks stairs, starting to go up to the second floor, he took hold my foot and started to run up the stairs with me. I held the banister with both hands to manage to keep from falling. I thanked him for the lift, but he said that nothing would satisfy him until we had a fight. I said, "Sure! How about tomorrow evening at five p.m. behind the barracks?" The next day, I was nowhere no-where near the barracks, for he would probably have killed Utah County News wmheraldextra.com Lowest fee in the nation - I JD KJ) J U OM 114 4M4 mm Jxchan$u a Bringing in Watermelons, Canteloupes, plums, squash & cucumbers Utah County's Real Estate Leaders TURN TO THE ' lOmimiii iiirfi nfn 1 i'a ' " 'i tM A its share of Editor's note: This is the second in a series about Lynn Gray, a veteran who lives in Orem. One day a fellow about six foot tall and weighing weigh-ing about 200 pounds crowded in front of me. I wasn't going to say anything, but he said, "I hope you don't mind me crowding crowd-ing in front of you." He paused, then added, "Of course there is nothing you can do about it anyway." I couldn't let a challenge like that go unanswered, so I grabbed him by the waist and shoved him out of line. Now a big guy like that can't take something so humiliating, so back he came. I had wrestled cattle and had done a little wrestling at BYU, so I sidestepped his charge, and even when he came back arm to arm with me, I would get the better of him and throw him out of line. This happened about five times before he gave up and reluctantly said, "I guess I had better go to the end of the line." In a letter home, I wrote, "I am called 'muscle man' more than ever now, because the chief calling the exercises would keep us going until everyone ev-eryone was exhausted and I was still going. Some even call me 'Little Tarzan' wouldn't that get you? I kind of liked the names at first, but it's now getting get-ting a little disgusting." Now in submarine training in New London, Conn., I wrote home about another incident: "There is a fellow going to school with me, and he's over six feet tall, weighing about 180 pounds. Eveiy time he came back at me after going on his ear, I would send him off again. The fellows got a big kick out of it, and this fellow told me afterwards that 1 was the only fellow around that got the test of him. Now every time I walk down the street, he looks at me out of the corner of his eye sort of eying me up." When we put our submarine in mothballs at the end of the war, I struggled hard, all alone, to take apart all the generators and the associated equipment on schedule. One day an of-' ficer met me and was upset he thought I wasn't doing my job. He said he didn't like my attitude, and I informed him that since he mentioned it, I didn't like his attitude either. I then showed him that I was ahead of my schedule, and would he like to get his hands dirty working down in the pump room with me? I thought I would get a court martial for talking to him so bluntly, but nothing happened. Next week: Lynn Gray vows not to accept submarine duty, but then dramatically changes his mine.
