Show Thursday, February 8, 2007 OREM TIMES Page 9 Springville wrestlers win Region 7 crown Jared Hunsaker SPORTS CORRESPONDENT If the Region 7 championships champion-ships were any indication, it looks like the Springville Red Devils should be a very competitive team heading into next week's 4A state wrestling tournament. Springville's Justin Judkins received the region coach of the year and Kolby Bradley won the lower weight most outstanding wrestler award as the Red Devils rolled through the Region 7 meet Friday night. Provo's David Ojuka was named the upper weight most outstanding wrestler. Bradley will be going for his third straight state championship cham-pionship next week. And he was dominant Friday night, beating Matt Spencer of Lehi in the championship match at 119. "We planned on peaking at the right time this whole year and tonight I thought we did that," Bradley said. "We gave it a good show and did what we came here to do. It's my last year and I'm not going to accept anything besides be-sides first." After Payson's Tito Ortiz won the 103-pound championship cham-pionship match, the Red Devils won the next seven championship bouts, from 112 pounds to 145. Tyson Hamilton of Springville won the 112-pound championship, champion-ship, Bradley won at 119, followed by Logan Wilson at 125, Hayden Petersen at 130, Jacob Rawle at 135, Jason Chamberlain at 140 and Caleb Christen at 145. "Our lower weight class is where our experience is. It's where we have the most state champions and the most runner-ups," Judkins said. "The upper weights are the ones who are lacking experience. experi-ence. We had guys tonight that were in the championships champion-ships and it's only their first year of wrestling. "They have come a long way in a year. I was pretty excited about those guys. ' They came and gave it everything ev-erything that had and that's all you can ask for." Those seven matches cemented ce-mented Springville as the Region 7 champions. The Red Devils finished with 348 points, topping runner-up Lehi (290.50). Payson was third followed by Provo, Orem and Timpview. "Getting ready for this week my emphasis has been on state because I know that's just around the corner," cor-ner," Judkins said. "It was really important that we had a good tournament here so we would have good seeds next week and so we get our tournament started off right at state." Jacob Sasser snapped Springville's streak by beating beat-ing the Red Devils' Bryan I Gift Cards from Gardner Village Buy online at gardnervillage.com State wrestling 4A5A Tournament Where: McKay Events Center, Cen-ter, UVSC When: Today, 5:30-9:30 p.m. Friday: 12-5:30 p.m; Championships: Cham-pionships: 7 p.m. Daily Tickets: $8 adults, $6 students 3-day passes: $20 Beardall 13-5 at 152. "It feels good, I'm glad," Sasser said. "I want to get an easy way through state, to start off with easier kids in state. So this helps out a lot, I expected to beat everyone today." Ojuka dominated Steen Christiansen of Lehi 19-7 to improve to 31-3 on the year in the 160-pound class. Ojuka was also dominate on the football field for the Bulldogs, Bull-dogs, and he thinks there is a carryover from the gridiron to the matt. "It helps with staying in shape and being able to perform per-form under the spotlight. It also helps a lot with strength and speed. I like wrestling because you're the only one out there and if you lose, you can't blame anybody else," Ojuka said. Ojuka is confident and thinks he should have a good showing at state. "My goal is to take state. I'm ranked No. 1, so I should take state," he said. "I just need to wrestle one match at a time and keep my head up." None of his three losses have came to any of the 4A wrestlers. "One was from the all-star duals and the other two were at the Rocky Mountain Rumble, Rum-ble, so none of those guys are in the 4A," Ojuka said. Payson's Hesston Parker (171) and Norman Adams (189) won the next two championships. cham-pionships. Lehi's Tucker Nielson won the 215-pound match, setting up the heavyweight heavy-weight matchup. In a very close match, Springville's Danny Hickman squeaked out a 4-3 win over Lehi sophomore Dylan St-adel. St-adel. Stadel is a guy that Lehi is counting on to make some noise at state. The Red Devils seem to have the recipe for success,. "I thought we did great today, everybody came to wrestle and we had kids beat opponents that they had lost to previously and that's always a sign that were doing things right at the end of the season and peaking at the right time," Judkins said. "This is a team that has a lot of heart and hopefully that's something that will carry us to a state championship." Bruin wrestler grabs Region 4 title Russ Lyman DAILY utRAlD Payday has finally arrived. After months of rigorous conditioning combined with periods of near starvation to make weight, local wrestlers are finally at the point in the season where they are rewarded re-warded for their exhaustive efforts with region and state championships. Not surprisingly, for the third straight year. Pleasant Grove's squad brought home the fattest paycheck by winning win-ning the Region 4 championship champion-ship on Feb. 1 at Timpanogos High School. "We've been working really re-ally hard all season and this is really payday," said Pleasant Grove assistant coach Chris Burton. "It didn't go exactly as we planned, but I'm pleased with how we did." Once again, the Vikings were nothing short of dominant domi-nant in the region tournament as they had the team championship champi-onship in the bag before the final round had even begun. American Fork led the team standings after winning the day's first bout, but Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove took the lead after the second match and never looked back. Although there was little drama in the team standings, there was still plenty left to be decided on the mat as there were several great championship champion-ship matches. The 103-pounders got the final round started off with a bang in an exciting matchup between Mountain View's Jake Fredrickson and American Fork's Justin Ballantyne. Early on, the match looked like a rerun of earlier contests between the wrestlers which were easily won by Fredrick-son. Fredrick-son. Fredrickson got three takedowns and a two nearfall points on his way to opening up an 8-2 lead in the second period. However, unlike the other matches between the two, Ballantyne had an answer this time. Ballantyne scored two points on a reversal to end the second period. In the third period, Ballantyne got an escape and a takedown to trim Fredrickson's lead to 8-7. After a Fredrickson escape, Ballantyne needed a takedown to force overtime. "I knew that Ballantyne would be after me. I felt like I had a target on my back going into the finals cause I'd beaten him several times this year already," Fredrickson said. "It was a close match so I was just trying to wrestle smart and I ended up catching him and pinning him. He was able to hang in there better when we were on our feet than before." be-fore." Mountain View coach Robert Rob-ert Stoddard added, "Kudos to him (Ballantyne) for a great match. What could've been a great finish ended up turning out really well for us with the pin, so we'll take it." One of the most exciting contests was the rubber match between Pleasant Grove's Sean McLean and Lone Peak's Taylor Tay-lor VanLeeuwen at 189 pounds. After two periods, VanLeewen led 3-1. The third period ended with a McLean escape and takedown, then a VanLeeuwen escape which resulted in a 44 tie and overtime.
