Warner NORTH COUNTY Not everyone in the Spectrum was cheering for Utah State on Wednesday night when Utah Valley State invaded Logan for the second meeting of the two schools this year. There was a section of Aggie Blue that was armed with signs and cheering cheer-ing for one of its own UVSC's Matt . Peterson. "I've had friends tell me they'll be at the game with signs and posters," Peterson said. "I'm excited to go back up and play in front of friends and family. fam-ily. It's always been a dream of mine. I know my parents are excited to see it, but we've got to focus on our game plan. Of course, I'm from there and I've watched the Aggies play, so it's going to be fun going back to play." Peterson, a 6-foot 4 inch senior, graduated grad-uated from Logan High School in 2001, where he averaged 13 points and four rebounds per game for the Grizzlies. Like many prep players in Logan, Peterson wanted to play for Utah State, but he never got the chance. The Aggies Ag-gies weren't interested. "I went to their basketball camps when I was a kid, but I was never recruited re-cruited by them," Peterson said. "I definitely defi-nitely would have gone there, but like I said, they never talked to me. Besides, I don't regret here. I've loved every second sec-ond playing down here. Actually, this might have been better for me." Utah State wasn't the only school that passed on Peterson. Utah, BYU and UVSC all ignored Peterson when he graduated. He didn't have the size or the resume that Division I schools were looking for, so in order to keep his basketball career alive, he spent his freshman year at Treasure Valley Community Com-munity College before serving an LDS church mission to Zimbabwe. When Peterson returned from his mission, he took advantage of an opportunity op-portunity to continue his career at UVSC. It was late in the recruiting season sea-son and the Wolverines still had some spots to fill. "He started the first game of the year for us that (sophomore) year," said UVSC coach Dick Hunsaker. "We found him in mid-August, he was with some friends in San Diego watching Shamoo (when he committed). I'm really re-ally happy for him because no one has worked harder in 20054)6 than Matt Peterson." As a sophomore, Peterson averaged just 2.9 points per game, but he broke out his junior year, averaging 11.2 points per game and shooting 39 percent per-cent from the 3-point line. This year, Peterson has played a key role in the success of the team's 10-5 start tot he season. He is currently third on the team in scoring with an average of 8.5 points per game and is shooting 50 percent from the field. He's also shot 37 percent from the 3-point 3-point line. He is coming off one of his better efforts of the season in a 75-59 win over UMKC last week, where he scored 18 points and made 7-of-ll shots from the field, including 3-of-6 from the 3-point line. Peterson was hoping the momentum of last week's game will carry over to Utah State game, where he expected to have a large contingent of family and friends on hand. He was trying to round up as many tickets as he could from his teammates who weren't using theirs (each player gets two tickets per game). "My dad keeps hammering me for tickets, but I'm not allowed to get that many," he said. "On the road, we only get two tickets. Some of the guys won't be using theirs so I'll see if I can use theirs. I have no idea how many, but I know they're will be a lot." Wednesday's game marked the second sec-ond time UVSC played Utah State. In December, Peterson scored just four points on 2-of-5 shooting in 20 minutes of playing time as Utah State held off UVSC 69-65 in Orem. Peterson was happy to have another an-other chance to show the Aggies what they're missing. He hoped to lead his team to a victory over USU in front of his family friends. 4 BWkS,4H.-;.55 ;s ri '"' t. . , V JS. UVSC also out-rebounded the Aggies 46-30, with 21 coming on the offensive end. For the game UVSC shot 39 percent from the field while UC Davis shot 30 percent. Ryan Toolson led UVSC in scoring with 14 points while Richard Troyer grabbed a career- and game-high 12 rebounds. "We had solid play from 10 guys tonight," said UVSC head coach Dick Hunsaker. "Everybody "Every-body that entered the game all contributed to the win and made influential plays." UC Davis was led by the play of Thomas Juillerat's 11 points. Trailing by one at halftime, the Wolverines scored the first 10 points of the second half to take a 33-24 lead four minutes in. UC Davis then cut the Wolverine Wol-verine lead to 35-31 following a 3-pointer by Vince Oliver with 1228 left in the game. "It was real physical game," Hunsaker said. "UC Davis competed com-peted extremely hard. I feel fortunate to be able to come out on top." I UVSC men beat UMKC: Don't let the numbers fool you. Richard Rich-ard Troyer is averaging just 6.3 points per game on the seasoa So what was he doing hitting 3-pointers, driving the lane and sinking free throws? Making a run at his career high. Troyer came off the bench to score 10 of his 18 points in the first half and helped the Wolverines Wol-verines jump on University of Missouri-Kansas City for a double-digit lead they would never relinquish as Utah Valley State improved to 9-5 after turning in a 74-59 win Tuesday night in the McKay Events Center. "He (Troyer) and Matt Peterson Peter-son made some shots that helped loosen that zone and gave us a little distance," said UVSC coach Dick Hunsaker. "He's (Troyer) getting better each game. The first shot he took in the game was not real good, but we've got a 10-man team here. Every player play-er has a tremendous amount of value and contributes in their own way to us." Troyer, a 6-f oot-5 junior from Belize City, Belize, was 2, 139 miles from his home town but he felt right at home against UMKC He pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to go along with his 18 points (one shy of his career ca-reer high) that included 4of-8 shooting from the 3-point line. "I'm having a lot more fun than I was when I was a freshman fresh-man or sophomore. I think my confidence is growing," Troyer said. "After my second shot, I felt pretty good Then I hit a couple of middle jumpers in the lane. After Af-ter that, I felt really good It carried car-ried over a little bit in the second half. It was nice. It was fun." In two games this year against UMKC, Troyer has more than doubled his season average with 15 points a game and he's shot 55 percent from the field and 58 percent from the 3-point line. Troyer wasn't the only one to give the Kangaroos fits. Matt Peterson shot the Wolverines Wol-verines back in the game after UMKC jumped out on top. He matched Troyer with 18 points on 7-of-ll shooting from the field and scored 10 of UVSC's first 12 points. "Richard told me after last game that I needed to shoot more. We knew they were going to play zone the whole game," Peterson said. "It was just a mindset coming in that we had to be ready to shoot when we were given shots to shoot and to make those shots. That was confidence enough and it got me going." UMKC's Quinton Day hit three early 3-pointers to help the Kangaroos jump out to a 12-7 lead, but Peterson responded re-sponded by connecting on four of his first six shots to give UVSC a 14-12 lead. UVSC center Joe Walker then rejected a pair of UMKC shots, including one by Dee Ayuba, who was on the baseline and ready to throw down a dunk before be-fore Walker sent the ball flying. Ryan Toolson then got hot. He penetrated the paint and dished off to Walker for a dunk. Toolson then popped a 3-pointer, went coast-to-coast for two and then hit a pull-up jumper to give the Wolverines a 23-16 lead. Peterson checked back in after taking a break and immediately imme-diately sank another 3-pointer to give UVSC its largest lead of the game at 26-16 with six minutes min-utes left in the half. It was then Troyer's turn. He sank two 3-pointers and scored all 10 of his first-half points in the final five minutes of the period peri-od to send the Wolverines to the locker room with a 38-23 lead. The Wolverines pushed the lead to 50-29 after a Troyer 3-pointer 3-pointer with 14:11 to play, but the Kangaroos bounced back with a 9-0 run to trim the lead to 50-38 with 11:13 left in the game. But UMKC could never get within single digits. Chris Bailey made a pair of free throws and Troyer drilled another 3-pointer to give UVSC a 55-39 advantage with 9:57 remaining. The Wolverines put UMKC away with a three-point play from Walker followed by a Walker dunk that gave UVSC a 6443 lead with 4:40 to play. Walker finished with eight points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Toolson checked in with 11 points and passed out six assists and Day led UMKC, who fell to 4-1 1 on the year, with 17 points. I Neil Warner submitted this report. The game was tied at 84 when Wolverine guard Sandy Marvin was called for a charging charg-ing foul with less than three seconds to go. A technical was then called on the UVSC bench and PSLTs Heather Arns hit l-of-2free throws to give the Vikings the lead. Susie Cornejo stole the in-bounds in-bounds pass near half court for the Wolverines but her desperation attempt glanced off the side of the rim as the clock expired. Robyn Fairbanks had 36 points on 16-for-23 from the field. Marvin added 21 points, Re-bekah Re-bekah Peterson had 10 and Ashley Ash-ley Grimm added seven points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Turnovers hampered the Wolverines, as the team committed com-mitted a season-worst 28, including in-cluding five in overtime. UVSC was also out -rebounded 4 1-39 after entering halftime with a 20-11 edge on the boards. The Vikings had 21 offensive rebounds, including 17 in the second half that helped them erase a late 10-point deficit. Marvin gave UVSC ( 10-5) what seemed to be a comfortable 10-point 10-point lead with 324 remaining, but Portland State (4-9) chipped away and tied it at 77 with 32 seconds sec-onds to go on a jumper by Arns, sending the game into (.IT.
