These crimes stand colossal when compared to the major scandals of past presidents. In 2005, Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., eloquently reminded the nation that Congress has impeached presidents for far lesser offenses than those committed by the current cur-rent president. That same year, Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., urged the House Judiciary Committee to ex plore impeaching Bush for his warrantless wiretapping program. , Former National Security Agency Director Gen. William Wil-liam Odom, responding to a question from a Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y., recently told an informal congressional congressio-nal hearing that a good way to extricate U.S. troops from the bloody Iraq quagmire would be for Congress to exercise ex-ercise its constitutional right to impeach. Odom, it should be noted, is a much-decorated military man with unimpeachable unimpeach-able patriotic credentials. George W. Bush needs to be held accountable for his crimes against Americans and Iraqis alike, but such an impeachment should not be a prolonged one. The United States needs to quickly reclaim re-claim and refurbish its tattered tat-tered global reputation. The one man who can accomplish ac-complish that goal with dispas-sion dispas-sion and dignity is a humble black from Detroit: John Cony-ers Cony-ers Jr. Once President Bush is impeached and removed from office, the nation's long overdue process of healing and reconciliation can begin. Then, and only then, can we begin to address the world's real issues the suffering suf-fering caused by HIV AIDS, the struggle against chronic hunger and disease in Africa, Af-rica, and the imminent and catastrophic threat posed by global warming. Con Continued from 1 avoided it and, later, the din-ton din-ton impeachment effort. Should the Democrats win control this time they will have an opportunity to practice what they preach about col-legiality col-legiality and bipartisanship. A recent Gallup poll found that 50 percent of respondents had a negative view of the U.S. government, gov-ernment, of which Congress is a part, while only 25 had a positive view. Only the oil and gas industry fared worse. Thus, the door is open for the Democrats to rebuild public pub-lic trust in government. They could do what true statesmen would do: avoid the temptation tempta-tion to wreck the institution by engaging in endless petty vengeance. For several years they have stood for nothing but opposition opposi-tion to the present administration. adminis-tration. It would be a golden age if, back in control of the House, they set out to solve problems by putting the past behind them. Rep. Conyers could begin the process by laying aside his divisive, potentially poten-tially ruinous idea of impeaching impeach-ing a president with whom he disagrees.
