Other activities included a duck pond, sand art candy, rotten apple launches, cash tube grab, and a cake walk. A unique twist on a traditional cake walk is the decorated soda pop bottle walk. Last year, more than 400 soda bottles were decorated for the event as animals, characters char-acters and other fun designs. Every class helps decorate the bottles, and the class that brought in the most bottles was rewarded with a root beer float party. Another traditional event is the Chili Cook-Off, which helps provide the food for the Festival. This year the school's head cook, principal, and Mayor Washburn were the judges for the different spicy concoctions. Like many school carnivals, the Fall Festival included a silent auction, and each class brought two different items to be auctioned off. Featured items included hotel getaways and numerous gift certificates, including the opportunity to take guitar or voice lessons. to Katie Geary. STAND IS THE POLICY. .com instate Vou'm hi good hand ftjcjsr CONNIE WAGNER Last school year, Orem High students reached over 37,000 "sluffs," or unexcused absences, according to Principal Princi-pal Jane Lindhout. In the April, 2006 issue of the Orem High School newspaper, news-paper, the Blue and Gold, she announces the upcoming formation for-mation of a new attendance policy, and this year, the new policy has been enacted. Basically, "sluffers" lose credit for the classes they skip or are tardy to. One unexcused un-excused absence results in No Credit (NQ, as does one unexcused unex-cused Very Tardy (more than 15 minutes late to a class). Four excused absences also result in NC, unless a form has been filled out and signed by a parent and teacher prior to the absence. Credit for the classes can be made up in an Attendance Remediation Class before school or during lunch. Some days, the class is free, and others, oth-ers, a fine is necessary upon School photos School pictures for all Hill-crest Hill-crest Elementary students will be taken Wednesday. Students this year have rarely ceased complaining about this harsh policy. I, on the other hand, applaud the school administration. The Orem High motto is "Where student achievement is our business, our only business." busi-ness." Allowing students to skip classes and remain unpunished unpun-ished was challenging that motto. Students cannot be accepted to "achieve" and succeed suc-ceed if they constantly miss class. While I am not a fan of "school fees" and the new policy includes more, I still praise the enactment of an attendance at-tendance policy. I come from an east coast school, where campus was closed, students were required re-quired to wear picture IDs around their necks, and cameras cam-eras watched the parking lot to catch "sluffers." The east coast is famous for its rigorous education and high test scores. Enacting a harsh attendance policy here in the west, I believe, is the first step to diminishing the gap between east and west United States' quality of education. fice at 227-8733.- Fall carnival The annual fall carnival is Friday beginning at 4 p.m. There will fun, food and games for the whole family, and it's a great way to support Sharon Elementary.
