Most Americans living today are not aware of the strong anti-war sentiments that preceded the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Although England had been at war for more than twoyears before the U.S. entered the war, we had not seenfitte-get-tnto the pay. One veteran commeritedonV-S. isolationism: In Boise, 1 learned that if you went to town m uniform, you walked down the middle of the street. The dogs would bark at you, and mothers would come out and grab their children.1" Renstrom experienced some of the pre-war tensions during his first overseas assignment assign-ment to Iceland. We boarded the ship USS William P. Biddle, a fabulous old German ship confiscated during World War I. We went down the coast of California and through the Panama Canal We pulled into Charleston, S.C., where I got some liberty, and then we started out into the Atlantic Ocean, still wondering where we were going. We stayed out of the lights of New York City, so we wouldn't be a silhouette for the German submarines, even though we weren't yet at war. One morning we all of a sudden made a left-hand turn and came straight into Reykjavik, Iceland, where the harbor was full of sunken ships. We were billeted in Quonset huts, half-piled high with dirt. That's to protect us from bombs," we thought. But the dirt was to keep the huts from blowing way. The wind would come down on them, and it was horrible. I'd never seen winds like that. We got our first liberty in Iceland after we'd been there about a month and a half. When it came time to eat, my buddy Sammy and I walked into a little place that had a sign on it: "Fish and Chips." The menu read, "Fresh Steak We ordered, and when it came, it smelted all right, and other people were eating it, but it looked different from any steak I'd ever eaten. About halfway through, a little waitress came over and asked, "How do you like the steak?" We said it tasted fine. Then she added, "Well, that's fresh pony. It's delicious, isnt itr Now 1 struggled with my steak. Sammy couldnt eat any more. So we thanked the waitress, paid for the meal, went outside, walked about three or four stores down the street, and Sammy heaved his steak right in the gutter. We washed his mouth out from a little drinking fountain. One day whenl was on guard duty, one of my friends called a girl over: "Come here. You ought to meet Renstrom. He doesnt smoke or drink." She didnt either, so she perked up and came over. After that, 3 conversed with her when 1 was on guard duty and got to know her a little. Finally,! asked her for a date. She said to me, "I will walk about eight or 10 steps ahead of you. You just follow me. I dont want to be seen with a Marine. If people see me with a Marine, they wifl think that something is wrong So from then on, wherever we went, I'd follow her , and when she stopped, I'd come up and visit. " An unfortunate incident involving a Marine happened in Iceland, Ice-land, and it made the Icelanders all the more suspicious of us Americans. After a couple of months,iGerman airplanes started to fly over. We could see the sun hitting the swastikas on the wings. They were just taking pictures, though one aircraft actually landed, its pilot took some pictures, and then it flew off. A week later, it came back and dropped a canister on a little parachute, with pictures and a note in i: "You Marines are oing a real good job with your camouflage, but if you would do this and this and this, it would be harder to pick out your positions.'" This was called the "Fifth Column." By this time, an Englishman, ""Lard Ha-ha," had joined up with the Germans. Somebody was giving him information, because he would broadcast tons from day to day exactly what our menu for meals would be that day . Next week: getting rank in the Marines.
