Thursday, February 9, 2006 School locks down for child abduction scare NORTH COUNTY STAFF Students participated in a three-hour lock down yesterday at Sego Lily Elementary School in Lehi when two children reported re-ported seeing a girl abducted during their lunch-hour recess. The FBI and Lehi police determined deter-mined the reported incident had not occurred. "I think what happened is the children's imaginations ran away with them," said Jerilynn Mortenson, Alpine School District Dis-trict spokeswoman. "They got carried away before they could call it back." The two upper grade students said they saw a girl go after a school ball that had bounced over the school playground fence and someone grabbed her and sped off with her in their vehicle. "They went in and told the principal, and as you can imagine imag-ine (he) called the children in from the playground." Morten-son Morten-son said. Roil was immediately taken in each classroom and compared to the initial morning roll. Absent students' parents were called to confirm they were at home and the faculty were able to account the 936 children in their charge. The FBI and police could not get enough concrete details in order to issue an Amber Alert, assessed no one had been abducted ab-ducted and school administration administra-tion lifted the lock down in time for the children to go home. The lock down lasted from approximately ap-proximately noon until 3:30 p.m. A school with an extended day schedule, the 2:15 p.m. students were allowed to go home while the 3:30 p.m. students remained in lock down until it was time for them to leave the school. Alpine School District has approximately two lock downs a year which are carried out when a potential danger to any child threatens the school or schools.
