I le swore pretty good, too. And he wasn't lying. I he Murine Corps boot camp doesn't do anything to make vou comfortable. It's pretty rough. If somebody did something some-thing wrong during the day, nothing much would be said. Liter, in the middle of the night, the sergeant would yell, "lall out! I-verybody go down to the beach and get a bucket of salt water!" The beach was about three-quarters of a mile away. When we came back, he'd stick his linger in it to taste if it was salt water. If it wasn't, then we would all have to swim in the swimming pool. So I swam, hut a lot of guys couldn't do the required 200 yards, and they had to go down to the pool every ev-ery night until they could do it. I Next week: John is wounded on Guam. Inc.. in January 2005, the Acquisitions Editor, Lee Nelson, said, "I believe that every person in the world has a book in them, and if you do, would you show it to me first?" Shumway had previously given birth to a baby girl who had lived for only an hour. It gave the grieving mother some measure of comfort to write down the story that her mother had told to her as a little girl. "So when Lee said that, I showed him this story," said Shumway. "Two days later, he ran into my office and said. 'Lindsey. I love it. We've got to publish this book.'" "I Chose You," illustrated by Amy I Iintze, tells the story of parents, while still in Heaven, choosing which children they would have on earth. Shumway 's mother, Catherine Cath-erine Jex, a teacher in Seattle, Wash., told the story over the course of her daughter's childhood, child-hood, letting it evolve so that the children in the story were doing things appropriate to her age as she grew. "When I failed an algebra test at BYU, I called Mom and asked her to tell me the story again," she said, finding comfort com-fort in her mother's words: "Some kids were good at algebra, alge-bra, and some were not." The message of the story is that parents are happy to have their children, that they are wanted, and have valuable contributions con-tributions to make. Shumway said, "We have a tendency to compare ourselves rals for physicians participating in the Medicaid program as well as referrals for physicians who are willing to donate their work are then made available. "I want parents to sit down and spend some time with their kids," said Shumway. "That's what this book is for." Everybody wants to know that they are special, she said, and this book has already touched many hearts, regardless regard-less of religious beliefs. Some 4.000 books have sold since becoming be-coming available mid-October at bookstores all over Utah and many other states. "I have a national tour scheduled sched-uled that will get it into more stores across the country." said Shumway. "My Western US tour covers Seattle, LA, Salt Lake, Boise, Las Vegas, St. George, Denver and Cheyenne, all between now and Christmas. Christ-mas. "Next year I will make plans for NY, Chicago, Miami, and the Mid-West." A large part of the book's attraction is the 20 pages of luminous illustrations. Using friends and relatives as models, Hintze depicted all kinds of children in gentle wa-tercolor wa-tercolor for this book. Her own children did not escape model duty, either, and are quick to point out which paintings they inspired. "That's me," said three-year-old Jacob. Hintze even used one of her own baby pictures and a photo of her husband at a young age as inspiration. People, especially children, are her favorite subjects. "It's fun to try to capture their innocence in-nocence and glow," she said. "That's what I like to do." Although accomplished in several different styles and in various media, Hintze finds it difficult when an author wants a certain style of illustration that does not come naturally to her. "It's best to find a different illustrator," she said, "rather than expecting me to do something some-thing that's not me."
