That definitely defi-nitely changed the momentum momen-tum for me. "I go into every match knowing 1 can break anybody. any-body. I've got a good return, I've got a good return game. I've just got to hold. If I can go out and hold my serve I like my chances against anybody," any-body," he said. Taylor went on to win 7-6 (7-2) 6-4, then cruised into the semis. In the No. 2 singles matches, match-es, AJ Millet (Mountain View) picked up the only win among Orem players, defeating Riley Jenkins of Murray 6-1, 6-1. Millet would then drop his quarterfinal match. At No. 3 singles, though, Mountain View snuck another anoth-er player into the semis. Greg Larsen, in his first trip to state, came from a set down in both his matches at No. 3 singles to advance to the semis. "I don't really start well," Larsen said. "I'm very competitive, but I like to make it more exciting I guess." In his first match, Larsen was up in the first set but ended up dropping it in a tiebreaker. He bounced back to take the second and third, though, and he said it provided pro-vided some confidence for his afternoon match. "The second match was a lot different than the first, though," he said. "It was just me being consistent. I was beating myself." After reaching his goal of making it to the second day, Larsen ended up falling to Tanner Perry of Timpview in the semifinals. In the team standings, Timpview against claimed the title, but just narrowly, relying on a victory by Perry over Lone Peak's Ben Camp at No. 3 singles. The Knights finished second sec-ond with 10 points, only three behind the T-birds' 13. Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove also was near the top, finishing fifth with eight points. Mountain View ended up 10th, Timpanogos 11th and Orem tied for 13th. The leadoff hitter popped out, but then Chelse Walton reached on an error when there was miscommunication on a pop-up in front of the plate. With water on the ball, pitcher pitch-er Alii Bramwell was unable to maintain a grip, needing a dry ball thrown out for every pitch. Still, the next three batters walked to score a run and load the bases. The T'Wolves picked up their second out on a line drive to right, but then Becky Levanger singled in a pair of runs. Woods Cross tried to get another with crafty base running after the hit, but it was third baseman Ta-jia Ta-jia Law who had the last laugh. A throw to third wasn't in time to get the runner there, and Levanger hung between first and second, trying to draw a throw. As she broke toward the extra base, Law pulled back to throw. But instead of releasing releas-ing the ball, she took it straight to her glove, swinging around to tag out Casey Plowman who was going for home on the throw. Despite the conditions, Bramwell Bram-well gave up only four hits and the T'Wolf defense committed only one error. "We played really well," Brown said. "Alii kept her head in it and she pitched through it. I think we came together tonight to-night and just played well." I Mountain Crest 5, Orem 2: Orem made it through regulation regula-tion in its elimination game against Mountain Crest Saturday, Satur-day, but couldn't survive extra innings. The Mustangs scored three runs in the top of the eighth two off a double to edge the Tigers 5-2. Orem struck first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first, but Mountain Crest quickly quick-ly answered, tying the score with a pair in the second. The rest of the game was scoreless until the eighth, as Mountain Crest shut Orem down, allowing allow-ing only three hits. The loss eliminated the Tigers from the state tournament. I Murray 8, Orem 1: The Tigers held on for five innings, but the Murray offense proved to be too much. Nursing a 2-1 lead, the Spartans Spar-tans scored six runs in the sixth inning to blow open what had been a tight game Friday. The Tigers had the score tied early when Delyse Downey singled to drive in Jenny Fiso and make it 1-1 in the third, but Murray took the lead for good with an RBI-single in the fifth. Murray went on to defeat Payson Saturday to advance to play Timpanogos Tuesday. Orem dropped into the elimination elimina-tion bracket to face Mountain Crest. The other Region 7 teams went through the first two rounds with mixed results. Lone Peak cruised past Cyprus Cy-prus in the first round, 3-0, as pitcher Tami Peterson threw a no-hitter. But against Utah County foe Springville, the Knights couldn't hold the Red Devils. Springville -scored five runs in the fifth to roll to a 7-3 win. Lone Peak dropped to the elimination bracket and played Woods Cross on Tuesday. Playing in the rain at Woods Cross, the Vikings were hurt by base running mistakes and errors against Bountiful, losing 7-2. Baseball I Murray 4, Mountain View 0: Needing a win to stay alive, the Bruins couldn't get past Murray on Monday. For the second-straight game Mountain View was shut out, falling 4-0 to the Spartans. The Bruins only recorded four hits and didn't get a runner past second in the game. Murray, Mur-ray, meanwhile, scored twice in the first and twice more in the fourth to earn the victory and stay alive in the state tournament. tourna-ment. I Timpanogos 3, Spanish Fork 1: Timpanogos passed its first test. After cruising past West to open the state tournament, the T'Wolves hosted Spanish Fork on Saturday. Two of the 4A powers, Timpanogos held the Dons to only two hits, earning a 3- 1 victory. After Spanish Fork scored to go up 1-0 in the third, Timpanogos Tim-panogos added two runs in the fourth to take the lead for good. The T'Wolves added on more in the fifth. Tyson Gonzalez had an RBI double and also scored a run for Timpanogos. The T'Wolves played Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove on Tuesday at BYU. Both Region 7 teams, Timpanogos Timpano-gos was 3-0 against the Vikings going into the game. ) Springville 10, Mountain View 0: After scoring seven runs to open the tournament against Highland, Mountain View couldn't find a way to get to Springville ace Mark Pawelek on Saturday. Pawelek allowed only one hit and struck out 10, holding the Bruins scoreless. Meanwhile, the Red Devil bats got the job done at the plate, pounding out 12 hits to lead to 10 runs in the shortened, five-inning game. Mountain View dropped into the elimination bracket with the loss and faced Murray on Monday. I Timpanogos 10, West 0: Other than the weather delaying their game, the T'Wolves had no problems with West to open the state tournament. Timpanogos had 10 hits in four innings, scoring 10 runs in the shortened game. Austin Heaps (Jr.), Cole McWhorter and Alex Lyons all doubled for the T'Wolves, while Wolfe allowed only three hits on the mound. Timpanogos moved on to face Spanish Fork on Saturday. I Mountain View 7, Highland 3: Chris Benson put the exclamation exclama-tion point on Mountain View's first-round game Friday, hitting a three-run homer in the top of the seventh to seal a 7-3 victory at Highland. In the game started Thursday and delayed to Friday due to weather, Mountain View held a 4-2 lead going into the seventh, thanks to a couple of throwing Salt Lake Co. HUNTSMAN (ANCEK LN'Snint UNIVfRJIIYOf UTAH 888.424.2100 2000 Circle of Hope, SLC www.huntimancancer.org errors by the Rams. Meanwhile, though, pitcher Bryan Dickinson was effective against Highland, and the Bruin defense picked off three Ram base runners. Mountain View moved on to face Springville. The other two Region 7 teams, Lone Peak and Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove, continue to roll. After making the tournament through a play-in, the Vikings defeated No. 1 seed Murray 10-7 in the first round. Their strong play continued as they won at American Fork in the second round of play. That set up a meeting with Timpanogos on Tuesday. Lone Peak was equally successful, suc-cessful, routing Olympus 9-0 in the first round, knocking off Region 4 No. 1 seed Mountain Crest 4-2 in the second. The Knights went up against another an-other No. 1 seed, Springville, on Tuesday as three Region 7 teams were among the final fi-nal four in the championship bracket. Soccer I Orem 3, Springville 2: It wasn't without some controversy, but for the second straight game No. 4 seeded Orem pulled off the upset. In the final minutes of the game Friday, Springville keeper keep-er Casey Cropper tried to clear a ball but it deflected off Diego Cueva and into the goal. Initially it was ruled the ball had hit two Tiger players and Cueva was offsides, but that was overruled and Orem was given the goal for the 3-2 win. Tyler Dunaway gave Orem the lead early in the first half, then tied the game at 2-2 just minutes before Cueva's winning score. Lewis Sturgis scored twice for the Red Devils. Brad Howard earned the win in goal for the Tigers. Orem moves on to face Lone Peak, the tournament favorite and fellow Region 7 team, on Thursday. The Tigers played the Knights to a 2-2 tie April 28 in region play. I Orem 2, Bountiful 1: After edging into the playoffs with a hard-fought final three games, the Tigers made the most of their opportunity. Tyler Dunaway and Diego Cueva both scored in a game controlled by Orem. Keeper Brad Howard allowed only one goal by the Braves, Region 5's No. 1 seed. The victory earned the Tigers a meeting with Springville on Friday. Earlier this season, Orem lost a 1-0 decision on the road to the Red Devils. Springville advanced by defeating de-feating Mountain Crest 34). I East 3, Mountain View 1: For the second straight season, Mountain View made an early exit from the playoffs. Again at home, the Bruins controlled most of the game, but couldn't find the net. James Cook struck twice for East High, while Paul Kim-brough Kim-brough scored and had an assist. as-sist. James Jaramillo picked up Mountain View's lone goal in the game. Among the other Region 7 teams, Lone Peak continues its title run, having little trouble dispatching Highland 3-0 and holding the Rams to only one shot. But against Provo, the Knights barely escaped. Tied at the end of the second overtime, the two teams matched each other through seven goals in a shoot -out before Lone Peak finally won 8-7. Pleasant Grove fell to Olympus Olym-pus 3-0 in its first round game. Location Track Continued from Page 6 edged Timpanogos by one-half of a second for the win. In field events, Tiger Spencer Spen-cer Equinto took second in the javelin with a throw of 172-08. For the girls' teams, this year turned out to be a little different. Mountain View found itself unseated from the top spot as Spanish Fork's Stewart sisters ran away with the title for the Dons. The Bruins finished second. Heidi Houle led Mountain View's charge, winning both the 800-meter and the 1600-meter 1600-meter runs. In the field events, Kristi Koplin had a solid meeting, meet-ing, winning the discus with a throw of 131-03 and finishing fourth in the shot. Brittany Harvey took home the title in the javelin, throwing 124-10, while Michelle Harrison won the high jump, clearing 5-foot-4. Timpanogos pulled out a sixth-place finish, mainly behind its distance runners and relay teams, as Vanessa Hawkins grabbed second in both the 1600-meter and 3200-meter 3200-meter runs. Along with Jamie Ashworth, Stacie Bartholomew and Jen Nielson, she picked up a title in the 1600-meter sprint medley after years of Timpanogos finishing fin-ishing second. "Four years we've been second sec-ond place on the medley team, this is the year we finally got it," Benson said. Helping with that victory were a couple other Timpanogos Timpano-gos runners, who ran in the trials to qualify the team. One of those was Meghan Reilly, who also finished sixth in the 400-meter dash and fifth in the 800-meter run. Just behind Timpanogos in the team standings was Orem, which was seventh. Kate Harline finished fourth in the 1600-meter run and fourth in the 3200-meter run. Krystal Harper was fifth in the 3200. Orem was also part of the Region 7 domination in the spring medley, with Heather Mella, Jessica Miller, Mindi Robins and Tiarah Shumway finishing third.
