Take the Orem girls for example. . In the first quarter Friday against Highland, the Tigers' press accounted for numerous turnovers and helped Orem to an 18-6 18-6 lead to start the second quarter. But the ease with which the Tigers grabbed those turnovers and scored resulted in a bit of impatience impa-tience on both ends of the court. "We weren't patient with the offense," said Orem's Ashley Boulter. "We just wanted to fast break and we just threw the ball away. Nothing was working on offense. Then we were cheating too much on defense and letting them get easy 3s and layups. I think we saw we could play against thern ' and then we thought we were too cocky and tried to do to much.Vtojrt-maid. With back-to-back 3s to start the fourth, Highland pulled within 34-26 and prompted a quick Tiger timeout. "We had to call a couple of times outs to settle us down, but we settled down after a while," Boulter said. Jamie Sagers answered for Orem with two buckets inside ,to, push, the lead back to double digits, and the Tigers pulled away the rest of the quarter. Sagers finished with nine points for the game, but also added seven blocks on the defensive end. "She has flashes where she showed some good things," said Qrem coach Ross Reed. Two different game plans collided Dec. 1 at Timpanogos, but combined with rebounding rebound-ing and defense, the inside attack was too much for Cyprus as the T-wolves picked up the 58-47 victory. With Timpanogos (1-1) up 23-17 going into the third, Cyprus got hot. Every time the T-wolves T-wolves tried to build their lead by going inside, the Pirates connected from downtown to stay close. With five 3s in the quarter, Cyprus trimmed the lead to 41-38 going into the fourth quarter. They shot the lights out," said Timpanogos coach Mark Hardman. "My goodness, when you can make some 3s with hands in your face, falling away, you can shoot it. They've got two kids out there who lit it up with hands in faces." Those two were Jeremiah Johnson and Aaron England, each of who had four 3s and finished with 20 points. But then to open the fourth, the T-wolves found the range. Cory Kellogg started things off with a 3 from the left corner that sparked a 10-0 10-0 run. Matt Iisonbee had a three and put-back as part of that, and Matt Hardman hit an inside shot to help put Timpanogos up 51-38. "I don't really shoot, but it was there so I took it," Kellogg said. "Because I don't really shoot it got the team pumped up. Til probably do it more often. If the opportunity is there Tm not going to pass up a wide open 3." 1 r Down the stretch Cyprus would hit another pair of 3s, but unable to score elsewhere, it wasn't was-n't enough to close the gap. ' Not that Timpanogos was perfect in hitting its shots, despite getting good looks from in close. ' . "I really liked our shot selection tonight," roach Hardman said. "Coir big guys made good cuts to the basket We entered it and had good shots. We didn't finish as well as we should or could, but then we also got to the free throw line quite a bit." But even from the free throw line the T-wolves T-wolves were only 11-for 23. "I'm shocked because this team can shoot them," Hardman said, but, Tm not going to be overly concerned." - Those good looks to results in some easy baskets early, though. All five of the shots the T-wolves T-wolves hit in the first quarter were either lay-ups lay-ups or short put-backs, and that continued into the second. Iisonbee started that quarter with a lay-up, then Kellogg had back-to-back pointblank put-ins, put-ins, including one off a slashing drive between a pair of Cyprus defenders. "I just use my speed to my advantage," Kellogg said. "I can see holes that usually guys can't get but I can use my speed to get to them and get easy layups." Shawn Yeats hit the first jumper, a 15-foot baseline shot with under two minutes in the half, but followed that with a lay-in at the end of the quarter. r On the other end of the court, the defense was able to force Cyprus outside. In the first quarter the Pirates had to resort to midrange jumpers, most of which wouldn't fall and ended with Timpanogos going the other way. In fact, the T-wolves dominated the glass on both ends of the court. "We ended up with 36 rebounds, which is a lot of rebounds," Hardman said. "Some of them were also long rebouftds which wnded up in some fast break opportunities for us. I really liked how our p aa rebounded the basketball." C53 As for scoring, as expected the T-wolves had a balanced attack Matt Hardman finished with 12 points, Iisonbee and Yeats each had 11," while Kellogg had nine. -g, Timpanogos was in ac$ again Friday dropping an overtime heartbreaking to Woods Cross. LANDON OLSON Times Sports Editor Their play may not be flawless this early in the season, but as long as his T-wolves are working hard, coach Robert Louder can look past that. Despite mistakes and some lapses, the players' hustle carried Timpanogos to a 55-45 win over Snow Canyon on Saturday. "I think we kept hustling. hus-tling. Even through the mistakes and through the mental kinds of things and the errors in position or running plays, they kept hustling," Louder said. That hustle, and especially espe-cially aggressiveness in running the press on defense, helped Timpanogos build a 10-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Warriors pulled within three early in the second quarter, but then Jennifer Harris hit back-to-back 3s to extend the lead to nine. "I've been working all summer. If I have the open shot, my coach tells me to take it," Harris said. Snow Canyon would pull to within five to start the third quarter, but against Harris stopped the comeback short. A layup and foul shot made it 27-19, then she hit her third 3 of the game to make it 30-19. The T-wolf lead wouldn't drop below double digits the rest of the game. But while the aggressive aggres-sive play did help on defense and with forcing turnovers, it also led to foul trouble. Harris, who finished with a game-high 23 points, fouled out halfway through the fourth quarter, while center cen-ter Cali Nelson picked up her fourth foul early in the quarter and sat much the remainder of the continued on Page A8 K ; 1m' '''..;.;-V;;'''9 .
