Took us a while to start getting get-ting that, I guesH," said T-wolf T-wolf defender Kellie Hegerhorst said. And it worked. In the 17th minute, the T-wolves finally j-ot on the board when Jennifer Nielsen took a ball crossed by Shantae Adams, from the wing, and topped it in for the score. It was the first goal allowed by the Tiger defense in four games. Orem battled the remainder of the game, but with less than three minutes, min-utes, Timpanogos put it away' Using her blazing speed, Stacey Bartholomew was able to leat Tucker to a ball, shooting across the goal into the bottom of the far post for insurance score. "When we put in that second goal I knew they didn't did-n't have time to get two on us," Lewis said. While the offense got the job done in the second half, it was the strong defense which has been only scored on in four games that held on in critical moments for the T-wolves. I legerhorst said, "I'm loving lov-ing it this year. It's way fun to Ik.' a defender. I've never Ieen on a team where it's been like this. It's just great." Having wrapped up its region schedule, Timpanogos was off Tuesday. The T-wolves play one final non-region game against North Sanpete before starting the state playoffs at home next Tuesday. The Tigers played at Mountain View Tuesday. While both teams had already qualified for the state playoffs, the winner of the game clinched second place and a home game in the opening round. Timpanogos soccer has won the region. Outright. With a flurry of goals in the second half) the T-wolves pulled away for the 6-0 victory Sept. 28 against Pleasant Grove, giving them their 12th straight victory. And afterward it was all smiles. "We just won the region, so we're very happy about that," said coach Natalyn Lewis. "And we don't have to share it. I can't complain." She couldn't complain about the way her team played, either. Even when she went deep into the bench goalkeepers goalkeep-ers playing at forward for example there wasn't a let down. Even after a 20-minute weather delay at halftime. "One of our things we've struggled with is being consistent for the full game and today we were not only consistent for the full game, but we came out even after sitting in the gymnasium gymnasi-um for 20 minutes and just played great," Lewis said. "Our entire bench played the game and they played well. We didn't miss a step." It was slow to start for both teams, but late in the first half Timpanogos Shantae Adams got things going. After Pleasant Grove was called for a penalty in the box, Adams took the penalty kick, slipping it past the keeper for the T-wolves' first goal. Once the lid was off, it didn't take long for Timpanogos to strike again, and again it was Adams setting it up. Taking a free kicking from just outside the box, she curved the ball toward the far corner, where a streaking Stacey Bartholomew bodied it in for the second score of the game. Then, just as halftime began, the rain and lighting hit. Players were rushed into the gym where they waited about 20 minutes until it was safe to play again. But when play resumed, it seemed as if they T-wolves were the only ones who showed up. Adams got back on the board with her second goal of the game, slipping behind the defense to take a ball played over the top and beating the keeper for the easy tap in. Less than a minute later, Timpanogos struck again, this time on a free kick. Going with the wind from just inside mid-field, mid-field, Mandy Valora drilled the ball, sneaking it under the crossbar to make it 4-0. It wouldn't even take another minute for the T-wolves to score again. Megan Richardson nearly duplicated Valora's feat of punching a free kick in, but this one went off the cross bar straight to Adams who put her third goal of the game in on a header. That two-minute surge put the game out of reach for the Vikings, but Timpanogos still wasn't done. Adams would hook up with Bartholomew again, this time setting up the easy 1- v-1 to make it 6-0 for the T-wolves. The past three games for Timpanogos have all been decided decid-ed by one goal, so Lewis was happy to finally see some scor- K- " ' & X. i , ' ' w fl ft ' ' zL ) H i9 y , y i . ,t.,.. .... i 1 . - 3---,'. pholo by Landon Olson7imes Newspaper Tlmberwolf Julie Hegerhorst (15) jumps over the back of a PG defender while trying to head a ball last week. ing from her team. "That was one of our big goals," she said. Tm sick and tired of onesie-twosieing these games. It causes me stress. So I told them no more stress for me. Let's have a good solid scoring game. We needed that." With the game out of reach, Lewis was able to play her JV players much of the second half, as well as giving the varsity players some chance to play elsewhere on the field. "We mixed it up. We wanted to let the girls have a little bit of fun and we wanted everybody to be hungry today," Lewis said.
