' Orem extended the lead to 21-16 before three kills by T-wolf Neilani Lotulelei allowed Timpanogos to get back within one at 21-20. The thing she 's excited about, though, is that when she's a senior, they'll be freshmen at Orem and all get to play on the same team. Besides playing for the school, and also as preparation, prepara-tion, Kaitlyn plays in tournaments tourna-ments around the West. Just a couple weeks ago she won a tournament she wasn't even seeded in, defeating the No. 1 player. And to do that says a lot, as she thinks the tournaments tourna-ments have tougher competition competi-tion than high school tennis. "I think it's a lot harder," Kaitlyn said. "Everyone is a lot more competitive and they're a lot harder than the people I play here so I get a lot of practice. Sometimes I don't win very many because they're so good. They hit really hard." That competition has prepared pre-pared her well for region play, as Kaitlyn is the No. 2 seed entering this week's Region VII tournament and a favorite for one of the three state tournament spots from the region. To get to that point she had some specific areas she's been working on. Her serving serv-ing has picked up this year as well as her movement on the court. "I used to be really lazy and not move around. Now I move a lot better," Kaitlyn said. Her coach has definitely noticed the change in her serving. "She's worked a lot on her serves," Gardner said. That and her overheads. Now she's just excited to get them." Kaitlyn has also worked on placing balls on the court and being consistent. As part of her practice she says she and her sisters hit 150 balls back and forth while working work-ing on their strokes. "We've always been consistent. consis-tent. That's how we learned to play, by keeping, our strokes the same every time," Kaitlyn said. "Lately we've been working on placing our shots more and ending the point faster. We can do that and still be consistent." Part of that consistency is being patient. Playing at No. 1, she faces opponents who are not only consistent themselves, them-selves, but hit the ball with a lot of pace. Every point becomes a battle. "Top position people hit really hard. They can hit winners really easily," Gardner said. "But she's learned if you can just get one more ball back then you can beat those people." Still, that doesn't mean Kaitlyn's game is perfect yet. She says she still has to work on her second serve, and especially returning serves. "I used to be good at returning serves, but lately I've just been doing bad," Kaitlyn said. The other big key for the young player is the mental aspect of the game. Thrust into the top position, she's had to worry about playing against a high level of com jfmmt' J pin iiii iiw,,,. iriiiihi ii i petition. Earlier this season against Lone Peak, her anxiety anxi-ety got the best of her and Kaitlyn was scared going into her match against Kristina Doerr. "Everyone said that she was good and I just freaked myself out. I've never been that psyched out before," Kaitlyn said. But that only happens the first time. "It's funny because she's only that way for one match. She's very good at coming back. Taking that and improving the next match she plays them," Gardner said. "She matures from match to match." The other big challenge Kaitlyn has had to face is a rivalry with Mountain View's Bridgette Strickland. Things got heated between them last year after disputed calls in their region matches and ended with line judges having to be called in. They played together on the same team during a summer program this year, but this fall the intensity between them resumed. In both matches line judges were needed and each match ended with the visitor winning win-ning on the other's home court. Kaitlyn says that the line judges don't bother her though, and instead she just tries to play her own game. "It kind of is for my benefit bene-fit too because if they're calling call-ing bad shots on me, then I can ask If I know I'm calling them good, it doesn't bother me at all," she said. In fact, the loss can even work in her favor down the road. "It just makes her more determined to win the next time around," Gardner said. "Which shows someone who's competitive and someone some-one who's a worker. She 's gone back and worked even harder." While just a sophomore, Kaitlyn is looking ahead of her at what she wants to do. One ofthosetjhingsistowinastate title, and with three more state tournaments ahead of her, she has a solid shot. ; ' . ; She also wants to play hi ; college. Her mom played at BYU and Kaitlyn wants to follow in her footsteps, but after that, isn't quite sure. "I don't know if IH go way far, like up to pro. I could if I wanted to but I have other things I want to do. IH still keep to tennis and I might even coach," she said. Those other things include going to beauty school her senior year, and maybe after that studying to be a pediatrician pedia-trician or a veterinarian. But those will wait. Right now Kaitlyn has more pressing press-ing concerns like helping the Tigers win another Region VII title. The team will face some tough competition, compe-tition, but with No. 1 seeds at No. 2 and 3 singles, in addition to Kaitlyn, the Tigers are one of the favorites. Play begins Thursday at Timpanogos with the championship cham-pionship matches Friday. The state tournament begins Oct. 8 at Liberty Park. THE DEFINITION OF QUALITY & WORKMANSHIP" POOR i1: |
