Debut of a new head coach. Opening game of the season. In a day of firsts for the Orem Tigers, there was one that was bigger than the rest the first win of the year. With the game moved to Orem due to unplayable field conditions at American Fork, the Tigers took advantage of the home crowd, picking up the 4-3 win Monday. And considering the weather has kept the Tigers from even practicing outside, it makes their performance just that much better. "To come out right the first game, the first sunny day, it was OK," head coach Kerry Downs said. "We did all right." That was probably somewhat of an understatement, though, as Orem played tough defense, allowing only four hits. "We're pretty happy with how they played defensively," Downs said. "Pitching was excellent for the first game." Shawn Naugle got the start for the Tigers, striking out the first two batters, but then giving up a home run to Shay Conder. "It was where the pitch was called, low inside curve ball. The kid just golfed it out," Naugle said. Naugle bounced back though, striking out the next batter to end the inning. He would give up one more hit and one more run through three more innings. Trailing 1-0, Orem came back in the second. J.J. Downs got aboard with a one-out double, the Jason Golightly gave Orem the lead, knocking a two-run homer over the right-center fence. "I thought it was going to be too high to go out," Golightly said. AF tied the game 2-2 in the fourth, but Mike Morgan picked up Orem's second home run of the day in the bottom half of the inning, putting Orem back up 3-2. Cameron Pearson entered to pitch in the fourth, but AF got things going, putting two runners run-ners on after an Orem errors and hit batter. A sacrifice fly advanced the runners, giving the Cavemen two on with one out, but then the Tiger defense stiffened. A sharp hit fly to the left-center gap looked like it'd give AF the lead, but hustling over from left field, J.J. Downs made the diving catch. AF scored one run on the play, but the catch saved the second run. "We had an awesome catch in left field out there that saved two runs," coach Downs said. "In effect that was a game saver." In the bottom of the fifth, a two-out rally would finally give the Tiger's the lead for good. After Trent Barney was hit by a pitch, an error allowed him to advance to third and Devin Wilkins to second. Morgan came through again, this time slapping slap-ping a single to left for the game winning RBI. While it's still early, coach Downs said he did expect a little more out of his offense, although if his pitchers can hold opponents oppo-nents to three runs, the Tigers have a good chance at a victory. Golightly agreed. "If our pitchers can do that for us every game, we can easily outscore any team." For coach Downs, who was named head coach last summer, it was his first victory in charge of the program. And he's relieved to get that win so soon. "You don't want to go too long or you get discouraged," Downs said, but he expects there will be more wins coming this spring.
