Show Times Newspaper Thursday, January 8, 2004 Page A5 Make a 'difference as a Mentor during National Mentor Month January is National Mentor Month and volunteers volun-teers can change the lives of youth as they serve as part of Community Action's Project Vision One to One Mentor Program. The mission of Project Vision One to One is to provide at-risk youth with the support and skills they need to prevent substance abuse, violence and poverty, pover-ty, while empowering them with a strong self-image and the necessary skills to become leaders and contributing con-tributing members of the community. Volunteers spend one on one time with at-risk youth. Each youth and mentor attend an assigned Power Group every other week. Power Groups consist con-sist of about 10 youth and their mentor who meet every other week and do activities that focus on either learning, service, or fun. During the weeks between meetings, the youth and their mentor meet one on one. Volunteers are required to give one-year minimum commitment, be 18 years of age or older and have their own source of transportation. trans-portation. A variety of opportunities opportuni-ties are available for volunteers vol-unteers to meet with the residents and make a difference dif-ference in their lives. Individual or groups of volunteers are asked to take wheelchair-bound residents for walks or to activities. Dances are held every Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Since there are more than fifty children and adults in wheelchairs, volunteers vol-unteers who are able to spend time with these individuals are always welcome. Many residents enjoy being read to or ung to. They enjoy watching videos with volunteers or doing a simple craft. They appreciate the friendships that they develop with the volunteers, Cant said. Additionally, dental assistants, hygienists or students of dental hygiene are encouraged to aid by both volunteering their services and teaching personal per-sonal hygiene. OBITUARIES r v pit i i Mil VIDA EVELYN SAWYER Vida Evelyn Sawyer, 91, died of natural causes on December 17, 2003 at the Orchard Park Care Center in Orem, Utah where she had resided for the past three years. She died exactly three weeks after the death of her husband, Archie. Vida was born in Loa, Utah on October 22, 1912, the second of nine children, to William David and Orilla Brown Peterson. She grew up on the family farm in Loa. The family moved to Bountiful, and she attended Davis High School until the 11th grade. She then worked for three years at National Biscuit Co. and a creamery in Salt Lake City and lived in an attic room of the Beehive House when it was a boarding board-ing house. She met Archie H. Sawyer in Salt Lake City during the depression, and they were married on Christmas eve 1931. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. They moved to San Diego, California where he worked in his father's car painting business. He later became a neon glass blower, working for his brother, David, who owned Marveon Sign Co. in Rock Springs, Wyoming. When David moved the business to Ogden, Utah, Archie started Sawyer Sign Co. in Rock Springs until he retired and they moved to Orem in 1975. After over 40 years in the desert community of Rock Springs, she was thrilled to move to her own "Garden of Eden" in Utah. Vida is survived by her son, Dr. Melvin (Sylvia) Sawyer, of Orem, her daughter-in-law, Jeanne O'Mara, of Springfield, Virginia; her siblings, sib-lings, Laraine (Bruce) White, Mountain View, Wyoming, Marjean (Gerry) Hickman of Sandy, Utah, and Ray (Dorothy) Peterson, Bonita, California. She is also survived sur-vived by 14 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. grand-children. She was preceded in death by her husband Archie Hyrum Sawyer, her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Don Jelovchan; her son, Major General David A. Sawyer; and her grandson, Andrew Sawyer. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 27, 2003, at 12 noon at the Sundberg-Olpin Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street in Orem. Friends called the mortuary Saturday morning from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. prior to the funeral service. Interment was in the Ogden City Cemetery.
