Times Correspondent "Are there really rattlesnakes rat-tlesnakes in your sandbox?" Orem Performance CoachClinical Psychologist Jon Skidmore asks talented musicians, public speakers and actors, who quail or freeze up, when it comes to performing in public. During his college career, Jon Skidmore, whose office is located at 479 West 1400 North in Orem, became fascinated fas-cinated with the trauma of performing artists not achieving peak performance, perform-ance, due to fright and anxiety. anx-iety. He completed his doctoral doc-toral degree in clinical psychology psy-chology at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology and did his dissertation dis-sertation on the musician's perception of the peak performance. per-formance. A part-time faculty member mem-ber of the Brigham Young University School of Music, Dr. Skidmore has been in practice as a psychologist in Utah County for the past ten years. He specializes in performance coaching, anxiety anxi-ety disorders, depression and parent coaching. He is committed to helping help-ing performers experience the freedom to play on whatever stage they choose. "Embarrassment is a powerful 'rattlesnake' that triggers such responses as flight, fright or freeze," Dr. Skidmore said Wednesday. "Many musicians live in a state of constant stress, because of their fears associated asso-ciated with performing. They have associated danger dan-ger with the act of perform ing," he declared. "Walking out on stage, or making a mistake, is like being asked to pet a rattlesnake, rat-tlesnake, for some people. Whether the threat is real or imagined, our bodies respond the same. Performers call it stage fright." Dr. Skidmore pointed out typical situations, which can cause trauma for many people, such as being asked v. i v ..Www ,,1 Dr. John Skidmore IF IT'S WE CAN PeWAII oo. to sing a vocal solo, play an instrumental solo, speak in church, or' give business presentations. Over the years, he has developed strategies .and methods, which can alleviate anxiety for people who are called upon to perform such seemingly seem-ingly ordinary assignments, as well as the more difficult challenges. "Most performing artists get great training, when it comes to their musical skills, but they get very little lit-tle formal training in the psychological skills of performance," per-formance," Skidmore said. His program and skills bridge that gap. As the psychological skills of performance come on line with the musical skills, the stage becomes a great place to play, and in his words, the "imaginary rattlesnakes" disappear. Dr. Skidmore says that anyone any-one interested in taking their performance to new heights can benefit from his coaching. He consults with individuals, groups, families fami-lies and organizations. Dr. Skidmore's next Workshop for Performers: The Eight Psychological Skills of Peak Performance, will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on December 4 at Keith Jorgensen's Music, 650 South State St. in Orem. For registration information, phone (801) 426-2685 or visit his office. ; According to Dr. Skidmore, mastery of the eight Peak Performance Skills will give one the psychological psy-chological edge to take him to the next step and beyond, as a performer.
