A scholarship at Utah Valley State College (UVSC) Law Enforcement Academy has been established to honor Joseph Dan Adams, a graduate of the academy who was killed in the line of duty in August. The Joseph Dan Adams Scholarship was established by his wife, Cydney, to help others receive a law enforcement education. edu-cation. The scholarship is also the first scholarship to ever be offered to students at the UVSC academy. "This man not only gave his life in the line of service, but he continues to serve the community commu-nity by giving students a chance to receive an education," said Nancy Smith, coordinator of private pri-vate scholarships at UVSC. The fund will be sustained by donations and through proceeds of "A Tribute to Our Hero: The Story of Joseph Dan Adams," a children's book published to honor the late police officer. Provo resident Marvin Barlow, a student at the academy, acade-my, is the first-ever recipient of the scholarship. "I feel it's a great honor," Barlow said. "I hope that I can honor Adams by doing the best I can." To be eligible to receive the scholarship, candidates must have completed all requirements require-ments necessary for graduation from the first module of training, train-ing, been accepted into the UVSC Academy and enrolled in the second module. Candidates must also submit other application materials. Every year, a recipient will be chosen by the director of the academy, the department chair of the UVSC Legal Studies Department and by 2 members of the Joseph Adams family. Amy Williams named Mtn. View Business Student of the Month Mountain View High School's Business Department announces Amy Williams as January's Outstanding Business Student. Amy is the daughter of Carl and LuAnn Williams. Her career interests include photography, photogra-phy, music, or accounting. She plans on attending attend-ing Utah Valley State College. Some of the classes class-es she has completed com-pleted in the Academy of Business at Mountain View include ;rv fp ??? " J,n 1 Keyboarding, AMY WILLIAMS Word Processing 1 and 2, and Internet 1 for Business. Amy is an excellent classroom class-room student. She follows through on her assignments and is diligent in her work and behavior. One of her greatest accomplishments is getting a 4.0 in three out of four terms during her junior year (only one A- in the entire year). She enjoys playing both the flute and the piano. In addition, she scrapbooks, camps, plays sports, and takes lots of pictures. Aspen Elementary Students of the Week for Dec. 31 through Jan. 4. Be part of a drug prevention team The Gathering place is looking look-ing for volunteers who would like to be a part of the drug prevention pre-vention team. Members of the Drug Prevention team will give presentations in schools and businesses across the valley. Volunteers will also deliver brochures to businesses. Volunteers make a difference in our community by raising awareness of drug abuse issues in our community and what we can do to prevent the problem. Miss Elizabeth is retiring after 35 years of teaching. teach-ing. She has taught 30 years in the Alpine School District. There will be a reception for her on January 10, 2002 from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at Orchard Elementary, 1035 North 800 East, Orem). (Liz) Sartori Before Miss Sartori taught in the Alpine School District, she taught for two years in the Salt Lake City School District and at the Cathedral of the Madeleine Elementary in Salt Lake City. She had also taught three years in Connecticut before coming to Utah in 1966. In 1968, Liz went to ELIZABETH SARTORI BYU for two f years of Anthropology and Archaeology. She later obtained a Masters in Education from BYU. In between the 10th and 11th year in the Alpine School District, Miss Sartori worked at BYU, supervising student teachers one semester, and she obtained a real estate license. In the Alpine School District, Miss Sartori taught at Lindon, Central, Scera Park, Sharon, and Orchard Elementaries. She has been at Orchard since it opened 19 years ago. During her career in education, Miss Sartori has taught all the elementary ele-mentary grades from K through 6th grade. Miss Sartori is also mentioned in "Who's Who in America's Teachers." She has also received the Thatcher Award from the D.A.R. Liz Sartori has many and varied interests and goals. Health permitting, she intends to spend more time on genealogy, genealo-gy, out-of-doors pursuits (i.e. birdwatching, ATV-ing, fishing), fish-ing), and maybe also a mission for her church.
