Show March, 200! CAREERS & EDUCATION SECTION MARTIN HARRIS The American Institute of Medical and Dental Technology's ophthalmic assisting program needs people with a great work ethic to help with the employment employ-ment demand. "Ve have more job openings than we have students to fill them," said Teresa Roberts, Director Di-rector of the ophthalmic assisting assist-ing program. The program trains students to assist optometrists or ophthalmologists, ophthal-mologists, doctors who specialize on eye diseases and surgeries, or become an optician or a contact lens technician. All these different differ-ent emphases have separate credentialing examinations. The class is held Monday through Thursday for 24 weeks and followed by a six-week externship. The externship is unique because it allows a student stu-dent to participate in the activities activi-ties of a professional ophthalmic or optometric practice. The course includes instruc tion in anatomy and physiology of the eye, front office procedures, contact lenses, glasses including the manufacturing process and CPR and first aid. Instruction also includes teaching preliminary prelimi-nary testing of patients and taking tak-ing history on patients. This testing test-ing checks patients for color deficiencies, defi-ciencies, depth perception problems prob-lems and movement of the eye. Students also learn minor office surgeries. "Our students prefer the personalized per-sonalized instruction, small class sizes and the opportunity to work hands-on with a variety of equipment equip-ment including lens edge grinding, grind-ing, lens tinting, contact polishers polish-ers and many more," said Roberts, Rob-erts, who has been with the school for eight years. "Our program is the only one of its kind in the area." The American Institute of Medical and Dental Technology is accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools. Medical Transcription Transcrip-tion is becoming the ideal occupation for people that want to work at home. Career Step is an established school teaching Medical Transcription for the last nine years. Since starting the school in 1 992, Andrea Anaya, president and primary owner, has seen the school almost double in size every year. The reason is Career Step provides quality medical transcription tran-scription training to its students. Anaya designed Career Step's course and it usually takes 10 months to complete. She said that it could be completed quicker depending upon the amount of time the student dedicates to it. Two ways are available to complete the course. One is the traditional tra-ditional textbook approach and the other is the online version. "We are the only one (school) that has an online program," said Anaya. Anaya, who has spent 15 years working in the field, put the course together because of continual requests of friends to teach them medical transcription. It took her more than a year to write the first edition of the text Texts for the course now include a keyboarding book, because the faster a person can type the more money they can earn; a medical word building book, to learn the terminology of the medical profession; anatomy, physiology and disease processes, which discusses each system of the body in depth; a medical dictionary and a 2001 pharmaceutical word book. Several other texts and resources are given to students, including audio tapes so students can hear real and transcribe notes given by doctors. Students take a hands-on learning approach at Career Step. This gives them the needed experience to get the best job upon completion of the course. Graduates from the Career Step program have a job placement place-ment rate of 98-percent More importantly 92-percent work at home on their first job. Anaya believes that women can do this job and at the same time stay at home with their children and families. Career Step receives many calls from women that are pregnant or whose kids are starting school or who want to work at home to be with their children. Career Step's Medical Transcription program offers the best solution to these women.
