Show IHC's Caring Magazine Dixie Regional Medical Center Location: St. George, Utah Approx. Investment: $90 million Opening Date: Spring 2003 Construction of a second IHC hospital in St. George will add to the capabilities capabili-ties of Dixie Regional Medical Center. The new 270,000-square-foot facility will improve existing emergency and trauma care, and will allow the development develop-ment of new services such as heart surgery and neurosurgery. After completion of the new hospital on River Road (near the IHC Health Center), the original hospital in downtown down-town St. George will be remodeled to add newborn intensive care and pediatric pedi-atric intensive care units. Intermountain Medical Center Location: Murray, Utah Approx. Investment: $330 million Opening Date: 2006 IHC is planning to build a new flagship hospital and health care campus on 100 acres in the heart of the Salt Lake Valley, near 5300 South and State Street in Murray. The IHC Urban Central Region Board of Trustees selected "Intermountain Medical Center" as the name for the new regional, tertiary-level medical center and health care campus. The facility will house some of the most advanced and comprehensive medical programs in the country. Construction is expected to begin in 2002, with completion anticipated by 2006. "The name is a natural choice because it not only reflects the region and communities commu-nities that IHC has served for the past 25 years, but it also reflects our heritage as a local health care organization that is deeply rooted in the Intermountain Region," said H. Gary Pehrson, IHC regional vice president. The new medical center and health care campus are needed because other Salt Lake-area IHC hospitals are running at full capacity and have no room to grow. LDS Hospital and Cottonwood Hospital, both located in residential areas, are landlocked and have no room for expansion. expan-sion. In addition, population growth is occurring most rapidly in the south end of the Salt Lake Valley. The location of the new center will allow for central access from anywhere in the valley and will significantly enhance response times for trauma care. The new campus will house many of the programs presently based at LDS and Cottonwood hospitals. LDS Hospital will become a community hospital, while the Cottonwood Hospital campus will likely be used for outpatient care. The new Intermountain Medical Center will offer the following programs and services: Level 1 trauma center and home base for IHC Life Flight air transport program. A nationally renowned cardiology and heart research institute. A world-class organ transplant center. A medical research and education center. An integrated inpatient and outpatient cancer care program offering a full range of oncology treatment options. A teaching hospital working in conjunction con-junction with the University of Utah School of Medicine and area colleges of nursing. State-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical surgi-cal programs. A center of excellence for the care of women and newborn children. Advanced systems for information technology and computer-assisted decision-making, supporting the high quality care for which IHC is well-known. well-known. IHC has selected the award-winning international architecture firm, AnshenAllen, to design the new cam pus, medical center, and physician office space. The San Francisco-based firm is known for innovative hospital designs that are patient- and family-focused and incorporate healing environments to enhance clinical outcomes and operational opera-tional efficiencies. "We're thrilled that a firm of this cal iber and international reputation will be designing our project," said Pehrson. Functional planning is underway to determine space and design issues at the new campus. More than 100 IHC multi-disciplinary multi-disciplinary teams comprised of over 1,000 employees, managers, and physicians, physi-cians, are meeting on a regular basis to provide input on design and functional space issues at the new facility. "It's important to recognize that we are not just constructing a set of new buildings. build-ings. We are creating an environment with the most advanced technology in the world that is being designed to enhance the way patients and their families fam-ilies are cared for," said Pehrson.
