This disease, also known as degenerative joints disease, arthritis and hypertrophic hyper-trophic arthritis, causes the breakdown of joint tissue, leading lead-ing to joint pain and stiffness. There are many factors that can cause osteoarthritis OAi. Although age is a risk factor. research has shown that OA is not an inevitable part of aging. A variety of factors may lead to the disease. Obesity may-lead may-lead to osteoarthritis of the knees. In addition, people with joint injuries due to sports, work-related activity or accidents acci-dents may be at increased risk of developing OA. This disease occurs when the cartilage and other tissues that make a joint work, begin to break down. As the smooth cartilage that protects the surface sur-face of a joint begins to wear away, the ends of the bond rub together, causing pain and loss of movement. Early symptoms of osteoarthritis can be stiffness stiff-ness and pain in certain joints such as the fingers, knees, feet, hips and the spine. A physician can usually diagnose osteoarthritis osteoar-thritis based on a medical history his-tory and physical examination. While osteoarthritis is not exclusively a disease of older Americans, it definitely has its greatest impact among this group. It is much more common in people over 45, and approximately approxi-mately one half of those over 65 have it. Women are more commonly affected than men. Treatment of osteoarthritis focuses on decreasing pain and improving movement. This usually includes a combination of medication, rest, exercise, joint protection, heat and cold treatments and weight control. Sometimes surgery is necessary. neces-sary.
