Furnishing the manpower to unbury the 24-year-old time capsule July 24th are (left to right) Bishop Clyde Wilkinson, Duane Herbert, Doug Clark, and Norm Cox. A Jeep Cherokee, stolen in the area of 800 West 150 North on July 21, was recovered on July 26 in the area of 400 W. 1000 S. The thief apparently ran out of gas and left the Jeep where it was located. A wedding ring set was stolen from an unlocked car sometime Tuesday night while parked in the area of 1800 S. 500 E. Three year old Olivia Smith, of Lehi, was visiting relatives at 1055 E. 300 S. on July 26 and playing in the swimming pool with cousins when she was noticed no-ticed floating face down in the water. Police Lieutenant Phil Murphy arrived two minutes after the 911 call was received at 7:50 p.m. by dispatch and continued con-tinued the CPR efforts that had been started by the child's mother. Paramedics arrived shortly thereafter and continued . life saving efforts. Some really fine work by paramedics and the hospital medical staff was sue-. As of Thursday morning Olivia was listed in critical condition con-dition and was being assisted in her breathing by a ventilator. Ten dollars in change kept in an ashtray and a Sony Walkman stereo were stolen sometime between be-tween Monday night and Tuesday Tues-day from an unlocked car parked in the area of 1100 N. 500 W. The stereo was valued at $75.00. The first President to t married mar-ried while In office was John Tyler, the tenth President. 4-"T I V ..... . X . j 'msfutfl A T Davis (bishop at the time of the ! Construction began on the red brick ward building in 1954, and the first meeting was held in the recreation recre-ation hall of the as-yet unfinished unfin-ished structure on September 19, 1955. It was noted that in those days, ward members participated in the fund-raising for and construction con-struction of their buildings. When the time came to locate and dig up the time capsule, it soon became clear that those responsible for its storage had taken their charge very seriously. seri-ously. After sod at the base of the flagpole was removed, several sev-eral different men - including celebration committee members Norm Cox and Duane Herbert --- took turns wielding a sledge hammer to break the cement covering over the 14 x 14 x 14-inch 14-inch welded copper box containing contain-ing the time capsule items. A cheer from the crowd marked the successful location of the box. After an initial check of the contents of the box, the adults in the group reassembled indoors in-doors for a closer look, while the children participated in games outside. Contents of the box ranged from the comical (an electric hair roller, a wig, denim bell-bottom pants, Leggs pantyhose), to the traditional (photo album, coins, 13-cent stamps, magazines, newspaper clippings), to the quirky (a sample of textured veg- -etable protein or TVR a loaf of bread, McDonald's "free breakfast" break-fast" coupons with no expiration date), to the serious (church publications, letters from auxiliary, auxil-iary, heads and the bishop to their unknown counterparts 24 years in the future). As the plastic-encased items were unboxed they were put on display, and portions of the letters from the 1976 ward leaders were read aloud. Bishop Lloyd Davis' letter let-ter commended the "good, hard-. hard-. working, well-trained people" of the ward who "take care of their own", and predicted that the bishop of the future would be a "special person." A summary of the bicentennial bicenten-nial celebration, written by Mayor Jerry Washburn noted that regardless of whether or not the annexation was approved, Sandhill Road is on a timeline to receive funding in 2004 for Betty Greer in 1976, detailed what must have been a wonderful wonder-ful celebration that involved the whole ward from literally months of planning and advertising adver-tising to the early-morning wake-up call firing of a replica of a Revolutionary War gun, on through the flag ceremony, chuck wagon breakfast, children's parade, horse and buggy rides, tours of three antique an-tique rooms set up in the cultural cul-tural hall, enjoyment of displays (antique guns) and demonstrations demonstra-tions (tatting and cheese-making, to name two), a hamburger supper, program, and square dance. Many in attendance at the July 24, 2000 celebration had also attended the July 3, 1976 event, including Lillian and Paul . Berrett, who moved to the ward in 1964. "I thought 24 years was a long ways off then," said Paul on July 24th, "but it's not!" Although they have now , moved from the ward, Keith and Jody Renstrom also attended both celebrations. "It's a wonderful won-derful ward," Jody said. "We lived here for 20 years. A lot of people moved in when they were newly married, and have not ; moved away. There are a lot of 'seniors'." Although Keith, a veteran, was participating in a Pioneer Day parade elsewhere that day, a number of Renstrom family members had come with 1 Jody to see the time capsule J, opened. .. . . ,:;., .. The 1976 memorabilia were actually interred in November of that year, after all the necessary arrangements had been finalized, final-ized, and the Sharon 1st Ward now plans to assemble and bury a new time capsule, reflecting life in Orem in the year 2000.
