Show June, 2000 ProvoOrem Chamber of Commerce Monthly Newsletter Page 3 FIGHTING BY STEVE DENSLEY As a young boy, I was invited to a special birthday party that would long be remembered. Utah native Gene Fullmer, former middleweight champion of the world, was the guest of honor. He invited all my friends to stand and one by one punch the champ as hard as we could in the stomach. I thought, This is really cool. I get a shot at the world champ with no chance that he would hit back!" My turn came and I took my shot. I hit him hard and nearly broke my wrist. That was the end of my boxing career. He retained the title and I went home happy to be alive. A lot of people have called from around the nation recently. People want to know why some of the brightest and best students stu-dents in the world would want to beat each other up in a Provo Fight Club. Thinking back to my fight for the middle weight championship of the world, I have been left clueless to answer them. When girls started to join the carnage, I stopped returning the national calls. I went straight to some college friends and asked why they thought this strange phenomenon phenom-enon had entered the scene. Some suggested that students were bored. They needed, to let off steam or get a rush, as they called it. Some needed the attention atten-tion while others said they needed it to prove something to themselves. The last one suggested sug-gested that Utah Valley didn't have enough things to do. For the sake of bringing a halt to the Rocky imitators, let me suggest some great things to do in the valley.
