ErooniTD sofffiMD team flakes Shqduddhdoo1 amines tiffle By Patricia Knoell Times Reporter Five years ago, a group of Orem girls ages 10-12 got together to form a softball team that took the Utah Summer Games 12-and-under category by storm. Now ranging in age from 15-18, 15-18, these same girls once again took home the trophy in the Summer Sum-mer Games tournament, this time in the 18-and-under group. "When Haley (Larsen, the Orem Bruin's pitcher) was getting get-ting to the age where she could start playing in summer leagues, I was told there just she'd have to go to Salt Lake if she wanted to have the opportunity to play summer softball," Taralynn Larsen, Haley's mother and the manager of the team recalled. "But then the Lewis family moved in and Mrs. Lewis suggested sug-gested we start our own team. So we held tryouts and got a team together." The Lewis family included pitcher Shannon, who wasn't with the team this summer as she prepares tp begin her college career at Universyf Utah, and catcher Mehssk. The remainder of the team was made of girls who mostly came from a small area and all were within the boundaries bound-aries of Mountain View High School. "There are a couple of other teams in the county now.'but they have mixes of people who will go to different high schools," Larsen added. "We wanted to keep this one to strictly those who would go to Mountain View." With most of the team in the "under" portion of the 12-and-under category, the sauad from Orem didn't worry anyone in that Summer Games tournament five years ago. The long-dominant Salt Lake squads immediately labeled the Bruins as'hicks from the sticks and dismissed them as easy pickins. That proved to be a costly mistake as the unknown team swept through that field undefeated to take the first of three Summer Games championships. champion-ships. The second title came last year in the 16-and-under group, a category cat-egory most of the team could still fit in. In this year's tournament, played June 14-16 in St. George, playing against teams that often included college players (a new rule allows a girl to play on the 18-and-under team if she turns 19 after January 1), the young Bruins were again victorious, los- ' ing just one pool play game on its way to taking home gold medals. med-als. The win came despite the fact that the Bruins were one player short after first baseman Shantelle Alex was hit in the head by a pop fly in the first game of tournament play Tuesday night and was unable to play for the rest of the tournament. POOL PLAY Bruins 11 Cougars 0 The Bruins started pool play Monday morning with a bang, shutting out a team made up of players from the MoabRichfield Cedar City area (several of whom play on the Southern Utah team). The undisputed star of the win was Haley Larsen, who pitched a perfect game for Orem. Larsen found herself behind in the count several times but got out of trouble every time. "She's great at that," he mother said. "I never worry when Haley gets behind, she just gets better when that happens." Meanwhile, Larsen's teammates team-mates were playing errorless ball behind her to give her the perfect per-fect game. At the plate, Chelsie McWhorter got the scoring going with a two-run double in the first and Syd Sumner, Sarah Nicholas and Kira Goeringer all added doubles as well. Wildcats 2 Bruins 1 The Bruins' only loss was the result of two unearned runs scored by a team from Sanpete County and Snow College. Larsen scored the Bruins' lone run on a McWhorter single in the second. On the mound, Larsen recorded six strikeouts. Bruins 2 Blizzards 1 Becca Roberts went 3-3 and Larsen and McWhorter each had an RBI to lead the Bruins to a victory over the Logan area team. Bruins 16 Provo 0 After playing three games on Monday, the Bruins wrapped up pool play Tuesday morning with a thumping of Provo's high school squad. Nicholas, McWhorter, Alex and Desi Allred all had doubles in the game and Larsen went 3-3 in a game that was called after three innings. TOURNAMENT Bruins 5 Cougars 0 Seeded first coming out of pool play because they had given up the fewest runs of any of the teams with one loss, the Bruins again shut out the Cougars. Larsen hit two triples, Melissa Lewis went 2-2 with two RBI and one double and Nicholas and McWhorter each hit two-baggers as well. Bruins 8 Blizzards 0 In the second-to-last game of . the tournament, the Bruins recorded re-corded their fourth shutout in six games. Jaynie Kokkola came up big for the Bruins, hitting a triple and logging two RBI. Sumner hit a double and had an RBI and Kira Goeringer went 3-3 for the game. Bruins 7 Blizzards 4 AThe Bruins and the Blizzards hooked up for the third time in the tournament in Wednesday evening's Gold Medal game. Hot bats and timely outs spelled another championship for the Bruins as Larsen and Allred each went 3-3 at the plate. Larsen had two doubles and Allred added a triple to the cause. Sumner and McWhorter recorded re-corded a double apiece. Larsen was named MVP of the Gold Medal game. Tournament notes Larsen pitched seven games in three days, recording four shutouts and giving up just four earned runs.
