Show Page 6 Times Newspaper Wednesday, January 27, 1999 Pmp hep$fr By Patricia Knoell Staff Writer As the first half of region play comes to a close for local prep basketball bas-ketball teams, it's time to see where the local teams stand and where they might be headed. For Pleasant Grove, a rough start in the first half looks to smooth out in the final stanza after af-ter both the boys and girls teams came up with big wins last week. For Orem's 5A ranks, Mountain View's home court helped it top Orem early in the week, but Orem bounced back to beat Brighton at Orem, while Mountain View was nipped by Jordan in Sandy. Timpanogos beat Jordan in an overtime thriller in Orem on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Mountain View girls remained undefeated in Region Re-gion 3 with a win over Brighton, Orem beat Jordan and Hillcrest and Timpanogos came oh-so-close to a win at Alta. Orem and the surging T-Wolves played Tuesday, after press time. BOYS Pleasant Grove The Vikings will be looking to build on two wins that ended the first round of league play and leave Pleasant Grove in a three-way three-way tie for fifth place in Region 6. "We're playing well and with a lot of confidence right now," said P.G. coach Craig McAffee. "We were close several times earlier, but came up just short. The biggest big-gest key to winning this week was that we didn't have the turn overs." Pleasant Grove started the week with a 59-44 win over American Fork and ended it with a 73-61 home victory over defending defend-ing state 4A champion Provo. Against Provo, the Vikings found their long-absent outside shot to the tune of nine 3-point goals. They also got a great defensive de-fensive effort from J.J. Williamson, who held Provo's leading scorer, Jake Chrisman, to 15 points. Brian Romney had five 3-point-ers against Provo and Eric Bond came off the bench to spark the team when things got close with six points and two steals. Timpanogos The Timberwolves made the most of their one game last week, beating a tough Jordan team 75-70 75-70 in overtime to move into a five-way five-way tie for second in Region 3. In the Jordan game, Timpanogos had a 10-point lead with five minutes to go in the game. But the T-Wolves made mistakes going down to the wire and a 3-point goal by Jordan's Bryan Isaac tied the game with 1:20 left and sent it into overtime. In the extra period, Timpanogos' defense came to life, holding Jordan without a field goal to outscore it 10-5 for the win. Golden Ingle scored 26 to tie for game scoring honors with Jordan's Jackson Brown. Mike Shepherd added 15 points for Timpanogos and Steve Ott, played a great floor game and added some tough defense off the bench to help the cause. Mountain Vlew-Orem The week got off to a rousing start with Mountain View recording record-ing a solid 61-51 win over cross-? town rival Orem last Wednesday. J Orem was unable to close the gap, despite Mountain View's 5-for-10 performance from the free throw ) line in the final period. Hunter played tight defense on Orem star Shawn Opunui while ; recording a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Tim Henry led all scorers with -i 26. Opunui topped Orem with 23. The Tigers came out on fire, holding Brighton to four points in the second quarter 24-14 lead at the half. Brighton came roaring back to outscore the Tigers by nine in the second half. Opunui continued his scoring binge, recording 26 in the victory. Jeff Ford added 18 to the cause. The win sets Orem up for a showdown at Hillcrest, one of only two teams in Region 3 without a 3-3 record. The Huskies are currently cur-rently one game out of the second-place second-place gridlock at 2-4. "We're still a little inconsistent and we haven't shot real well on the road, but we're definitely on the right track," Orem coach Matt Logan said. "We've got to remedy that fast with Hillcrest coming up. There isn't one easy game in this league." Mountain View, on the road at Jordan, lost a five-point lead late in the game and dropped a 56-54 decision to the Beatdiggers. As happened with Timpanogos earlier in the week, it was Bryan Isaac who put the hurt on a local team with a late 3-pointer. This time, his trey cut the Mountain view lead to one at 48-47 with under a minute left. A steal and layup and some clutch free-throw shooting sealed the Bruins' fate. Mountain View, atop Region 3 with a 4-2 record, will try to hang on to that lead when it takes on Brighton at Orem on Friday. Orem The Tigers grabbed two big wins over Region 3 foes Hillcrest (64-37) and Jordan (72-23). Against Hillcrest, Brook Johnson tied a state 3-point record with seven treys on her way to a 20-point performance. The Jordan game saw Orem's defense de-fense come to life, as it held Jordan Jor-dan to just six points in the first half and didn't allow the Beatdiggers into double figures in any quarter. Kristen Saliby led Orem with 18 points and Trina Knapp added 12 for the Tigers. After the game with Timpanogos, Orem takes on Brighton (3-3 in the league) on Friday. "Timpanogos is playing well right now," Orem coach Scott Houle said. "Hopefully well play like we have been and will be able to dictate what happens."
