Show f Wednesday, April 15, 1998 SCERA to bring back Kingston Trio by audience request r " t v, 1 -yy vj - It has been nearly four decades since the Kingston Trio changed the face of the American popular music scene with the number one hit, "Tom Dooley" and an armload . of other best sellers, but the group's appeal continues unabated un-abated in concerts throughout the United States. SCERA, which has already served as host for the trio in the past, is bringing back the energetic ener-getic acoustic musicians largely because of SCERA audiences who have written, called and asked for more. "The Kingston Trio has clearly been one of the most well-received find popular concerts we offer," says Norm Nielsen, SCERA President. They seem to capture a piece of nostalgia that appeals not only to the baby boomers who heard them when they first debuted but also audi--ences both older and younger than the boomers." The Kingston Trio will perform Tuesday, April 21 as part of the SCERA Encore Season, presented pre-sented by AM 1280 KDYL. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Mountain View High School. Tickets for non-season holders are available at $10 each weekdays week-days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the SCERA Center, 745 South State Street, Orem, or by calling 225-ARTS. 225-ARTS. The evening is made possible pos-sible by Sils Cowboy Grill, American Ameri-can Ladder & Scaffolding, The Travel Station and Courtyard by Marriott with media support from The Daily Herald, TCI and VIP Media Group. Two of the three original members mem-bers of the trio remain with the group, and Bob Shane, the trio's long time leader says when Nick Reynolds, also an original member, mem-ber, rejoined The Kingston Trio several years ago, the nucleus of the original sound returned. "It was always Nick and I who really defined the Kingston Trio," he explains. "So this trio, which also includes George Grove (original singer was Dave Guard), sounds very much like the original group with one major ma-jor difference-this one sounds much better." The trio formed in 1957 as the three were college students in San Francisco. With only acoustic acous-tic guitars and banjoes, they., forged melodies that awakened America to its rich folk heritage. Their release of "Tom Dooley" in October of 1958 propelled the trio to the number one vocal group in the world and ushered in an era of folk music from people whose names became synonymous syn-onymous with the 60's folk era: Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Peter, Pe-ter, Paul & Mary. Their record sales and concert draws were only surpassed by the Beatles. Dave Guard left the group in 1961 after the signers earned two Grammy Awards and several gold records. John Stewart joined the trio and the group stayed intact in-tact for six years. It reformed in 1972 with Shane, George Grove and Roger Gambill, and for a decade, de-cade, says Shane, they traveled the world and played to sold out houses. Gambill's death in 1985 rocked the group, but it retrenched when Reynolds rejoined the group 30 years after he helped form The Kingston Trio. The trio, with its trademark three-part harmony and clean, crisp sound keeps the group touring tour-ing 35 weeks a year. Grove arranges ar-ranges and scores their music for symphonies, and they play approximately ap-proximately 20 major symphony concerts each year. As Bob Shane put it, "All the people want is for us to sing a song, tell a story, and make it good."
