The Bats, previously losing to the Yankees in the semi-finals, battled bat-tled the first place city league West champs, the Firebirds, Friday evening eve-ning in the losers' bracket semifinals semi-finals for an unpredicted win. Kim Jackson was placed on first base by an intentional walk to load the bases and, if scored, would be the winning run. Justin Wilde, leading the Bats in RBIs during the tournament, was at bat with two outs, and hit a single near the right field base line to score all three runners. run-ners. With this win, the West Bats were pumped for the championship champion-ship playoff against the East Yankees. Even though the Yankees entered the championship game undefeated and pitching Korie Olsen, Justin Thomas, and Kit Nor-ris, Nor-ris, the West Bats won the first play-off game 7-3. But not anymore. You can become lean and energetic ener-getic by following the sound principles, prin-ciples, and not sacrifice too much even if you don't have time to cook special foods and you hate "all natural" foods. Even if you're not into the fat-free, no-sugar stuff and your favorite meal is pizza and ice cream. You're not destined to be fat just because you don't have any willpower. - It doesn't take willpower to be lean and free. All it takes is about five minutes of planning each day. You'll be surprised and excited when you do. You don't give up the foods you love. You don't eat all fat-free, sugar-free foods. You won't believe the freedom. You can eat out all the time and buy convenience con-venience food, too, if you prepare the Lean & Free menus every day. Most of the meals take fifteen minutes or less to fix. In this column, I'll be sharing some of those recipes with you. You'll feel so much better and you'll have a lot more energy than you may have had in the past. You won't deprive yourself, either. For example, let's take your favorite meal pizza and ice cream. There are two kinds of days when you can eat pizza and ice cream "A" days, when you're really into being perfect, and "B" days, when you're just maintaining or coasting along. On an "A" day, buy wholewheat whole-wheat hamburger buns, split them ' in half, and put canned pizza sauce, fresh mixed stir-fry vegetables (prepared in advance) and skim mozzarella cheese on top. Then bake these pizza wheels at 400 degrees, and in just eight minutes they're ready. My family loves them. Then for ice cream, blend frozen peaches with frozen peach-juice peach-juice concentrate and skim or 1 milk. This makes delicious ice cream. I eat three or four mini-pizzas along with a cup and a half of the "ice cream". When you add a glass of water, you have a completely com-pletely balanced A meal of water, vegetable, grain, protein, and fruit, all prepared in less than 15 minutes. If you don't even have 15 minutes, order a plain cheese pizza and a pepperoni pizza. Also, order an all-vegetable-and-fruit pizza with tomatoes, onions, green peppers, pep-pers, mushrooms, pineapple, and just a few olives. Before the pizza comes, put a plate of mixed raw vegetables and low fat dip on the . iable along with a pitcher of water. Then the whole family can attack the vegetables while the pizza is in transit. When the pizza arrives, treat yourself to two vegetable slices, one cheese slice, and one pepperoni slice along with some delicious fresh or canned fruit. For dessert, pull out the "premium lite ice milk". It has only eight fat grams per cup, Dana Thornock is the author of Lean & Free 2,000 Plus and Dana's Cookbook. On June 26, the Indians of the Orem 15-year-old division were crowned Tournament Champions. What s exciting is they were the last place team winning only two games in the regular season. Matt Rowe Impacts Utah's Trade Scene The year has gone well for Mountain View sprinter Matt Rowe. Only a sophomore last year, Rowe emerged as the Bruins' Brui-ns' leading sprinter. Matt's specialty spe-cialty is the grueling 400 M. dash, and all season long his times kept dropping. He also ran the 200 M, third leg of the 4X100 M relay, and anchored the 4X400 M relay. Near the end of the season, he claimed the Region 4 championship champion-ship in the 400 M and set a new record in the region meet of 49.8 seconds. Using this performance as a springboard, Matt went on to the state meet. As he considered competing against mostly seniors at state Matt said, "First I hope to qualify for the finals. Then I'd like to be in the top five." He placed 4th in the race, with two seniors and a junior coming in ahead of him. But the good times were just beginning. Rowe started working out with the Orem Track club as summer began. This time he ran against his own age group, and even though he hasn't seen much serious competition the times kept dropping. At the Utah Summer Games Matt collected 4 medals. He won a gold in the 400 M with a personal per-sonal best time and a Summer Games record for his age group of 49.2 seconds. It's interesting to note that his most serious contender contend-er was another Orem Track club member, Orem High School's Adam Lcifson. The other medals were a gold in the 4X100 M relay, a silver in n .4. , t. pt i Matt Rowe sprints 200 M, and a bronze in the 100 M. Three days later he was off to the Utah State Junior Olympic championships at Granite High School in Salt Lake City where he won the 400 M dash and participated partici-pated in the 4X100 relay, and the 4X400 M relay. The 4X400 relay team of Ryan Maag, Rick Swenson, previously previ-ously mentioned Adam Leifson, and Matt Rowe not only expected to win, but they hoped to break the record. They not only broke it, they smashed it by 11 seconds. When asked about his chances there Rowe said, "I think the 4X400 relay team will win and go on to nationals. nation-als. In the 400 M, I stand a good chance. Last year, my OTC teammate team-mate Adam Leifson won it with a time of 52 seconds. So if I keep working hard and have a good day there, maybe I'll qualify for nationals na-tionals in that too."
