Notes from the September 19 meeting of the Orem State Street Project Organization: Use of barrels debated: Utah Department of Transportation's Trans-portation's Dan Knowlden suggested sug-gested the continued use of barrels bar-rels to guide the shifting traffic along State Street, but said vertical verti-cal panel barriers might be used to demarcate traffic lanes where the flow is in straight lines, then the barrels could be set up in fixed patterns to show more clearly where business entrances are. OSSPO chair ReNae Brereton suggested the idea be tried in this year's phase of the project to see if it works. Center Street to be closed: It appears that east-west traffic at the Center StreetState Street intersection in Orem may be closed for as long as six weeks during 1995's second phase of State Street reconstruction. Knowlden said project officials have concluded it may be best tc shut down the area for that long in order to complete the needed work, then move out. Secondary accesses to businesses in the area and "local traffic only" policies will be employed. Second phase: The second phase of State Street reconstruction reconstruc-tion will begin in spring of 1995 and proceed from 1000 South to the north of Center Street. Knowlden showed maps of the reconstruction area which divide the project into numbered "work sections". Work will proceed along the sections, beginning on the east side of the street. As many as five or six sections at a time will be in various stages of work before the first section Vera Landrum Vera Evelyn Raven Landrum passed away September 12, 1994, at her home in Orem. Traffic will be routed in S-pat-terns as the concrete roadway is pourefl and given time to season. Planners have used what has been learned from the first phase to improve the second phase of construction. OSSPO coordinator, coor-dinator, Kevin Long, said, "This is a really good layout for businesses." busi-nesses." Brereton said businesses have found that the "leap-frogging" with construction and utility companies' work has hurt the most, and the modified plan should help work move along more quickly, hopefully impacting impact-ing businesses less. Utility: Annette Stoddard, employed in operations with First Security Bank, said the business had been hurt more by the utility work than by the actual roadwork. She also suggested businesses be notified beforehand of utility plans, because her business had gone to the expense of replacing and restoring res-toring the grounds after construction, construc-tion, then had to have it torn out again for the utility work. Knowlden said the power company com-pany is behind schedule because of the microburst storm in last spring, but he said they have com- . mitted to restore anything they tear up. Torn up: Kent Robison, manager of the State Street Arctic Circle, expressed frustration frustra-tion with having large areas of the street near the business torn out for three weeks now. He said it is hard to understand because there has not been a lot of visible work going on. Brereton and Knowlden said a November 15 contract completion date should apply some pressure. |
