He was born September 8, 1954, a son of George and Barbara Davis Hughes in Rochester, New York. Tom lived in Los Angeles for 23 years. He loved people and had many friends. He had a special touch with plants and animals, leaving his beloved Nikki and Kitty in the loving care of special friends. He truly touched the lives of all who knew him. Survivors include his parents, George and Barbara Hughes of Mobile, Ala.; his brothers: George, of Batavia, N.Y., and Douglas, of Mobile, Ala.; his sisters: Holly Poluch of Springdale, N.Y.. and Judy Porrav of Orem. Dwain Eugene Judkins Dwain Eugene Judkins, age 62, passed away after a four year battle with cancer, February 1, 1994 at his home in Orem with his family around him. He was born November No-vember 6, 1931 in Rigby, Idaho, a son of Leonard Newell and Susan Cleone Beus Judkins. He married Marjorie Ann Rowley on April 7, 1954 in the Manti LDS Temple. She died April 27, 1993. Dwain was an active ac-tive member of the J I LUL1 IDS Church and served as the Orem 52nd Ward Bishop from 1977 to 1982. He owned a construction business in Orem which expanded four generations and built many homes during the 1960's. He was loved by all who knew him. Surviving family members include five sons and two (laughters: David Lenn Judkins, Deon Eugene Judkins, Kay Judkins Jud-kins Durrant, Myron Dwain Judkins, Mark Ammon Judkins, Darrell Wayne Judkins, and Margene Judkins Nielsen; 25 grandchildren; three brothers: Carlos of Kirkland, Wash.; Carlton of Moses Lake, Wash.; and J. Leonard of West Valley City, Utah; one sister-in-law, Joan of Provo, Utah. He was preceded in death by parents, wife, and brother Newell K. Judkins. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 5, 1994 at 10 a.m. at the Suncrest 9th Ward Chapel, 150 N. 400 West, Orem. He was born October 20, 1902, in American Fork, Utah, to George A. and Elizabeth Cousin Conder. He married Maude Hampton in Provo, Utah, July 11, 1929. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Provo Temple on October 2, 1985. She died June 19, 1983. He is survived by five sons and four daughters; 34 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; one brother, and four sisters, including Sylvia Hol-daway Hol-daway of Vineyard and Elva Nielsen of Orem. Funeral services were held February 7 in the Anderson & Sons Mortuary Chapel. Burial was in the American Fork Cemetery. Elfrida Georgina Sorensen Elfrida Georgina Sorensen, a longtime long-time resident of Provo and Orem, passed away in Narvik, Norway, at the age of 95, on December 22, 1993. Services were held in her honor in Norway. Elfrida Sorensen was active in the LDS Church and emigrated to the United States in 1950 with her husband hus-band and youngest daughter in order to be able to attend the temple regularly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; and her second son, Ernst. She is survived by her oldest son, Karl, and her oldest daughter, Karin Ivarsson and children and grandchildren in Norway; and by her youngest daughter, Sonia Harris of Orem and her children and grandchildren. She was laid to rest in the Provo City Cemetery beside her husband, Alfred O.M. Sorenson, who died in 1965. One of the WjL-r Family Dr. Florence Hannah Pettier Segelman Dr. Florence Hannah Pettier Segelman, Segel-man, beloved wife of Dr. Alvin B. Segelman, entered into rest January 9, 1994, in Provo, Utah. Florence was born on April 27, 1941, in Beaver, Penn., the daughter of Eugene and Sarah Pettier. Elected to the National Honor Society, she graduated from Beaver High School and was awarded a Daughters of the American Revolution Revolu-tion scholarship to attend Allegheny College, where she received the Bachelor of Science degree. Subsequently, Sub-sequently, Florence did postgraduate work at Women's Medical College in Philadelphia and at the University of Pittsburgh, where she taught microbiology and pharmacognosy. She was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree in pharmacognosy from the University of Pittsburgh in 1974, based on her chemical and biological studies on native medicinal plants which she collected herself in the jungle around the headwaters of the Amazon River near Iquitos, Peru. Her marriage to Professor Alvin Segelman in 1972 was a marriage truly conceived in Heaven. Dr. Flo taught and performed research at Rutgers University College of Pharmacy Phar-macy in New Jersey for four years, where she published several important impor-tant scientific papers on the chemistry and pharmacology of marijuana and various other medicinal plants. During the next 14 years in New Jersey, she served as a senior scientist and section leader in the pharmaceutical industry at Wallace Wal-lace Laboratories, where she was involved in-volved in the development of several drugs, including a new anti-epilepsy agent just released in 1993. Dr. Flo is survived by her beloved husband, Alvin, of Orem; stepchildren: step-children: Sheera Segelman of Water-town, Water-town, Mass., and Lauren Segelman Barnes of Middleboro, Mass.; brothers: Donald Pettier of Beaver, Penn. and Paul Pettier of Long Beach, Calif.; sister, Ruth Furman of Beaver Falls, Penn.; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Burial was on January 12, 1994, in Boston, Mass. at Temple Emeth Cemetery, with Rabbi Jeff Segelman officiating. ' The Talmud teaches that at any point in time, the world is sustained by 36 righteous persons whose identities iden-tities remain hidden. Florence was truly one of these righteous. Goodbye for now, Flo; your memory lives forever in those whose lives you touched. William Engle William A. Engle, age 75, of Mapleton, died Saturday, February 5, 1994, at his home. He was born in Price on March 3, 1918, the eldest son of William A. and Lovina Green Engle. He married Vera Carter Spetember 10, 1950, in Coalville, Utah. He is survived by his wife of Mapleton; one son and two daughters, including Paula Engle of Orem; one sister; and ten grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today, February 9, 1994, at 2 p.m. in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel, 2 1 1 E. 200 South, Springville. Friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Max Bond Max LeRoy Bond, 62, died February 3, 1994, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born May 31, 1931, in Heber, Utah, to Van and Ida May Lee Bond. He married Kay Frances Carroll Car-roll June 3, 1954, in the Manti LDS Temple. He is survived by his wife of ' American Fork; two sons, including Mike L. of Orem; two daughters; nine grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters. He was born November 15, 1918, a son of Lyle L. and Eva Dean Shirts Watters. He married Madge Fillmore July 12, 1941, in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Their marriage was solemnized September 25, 1941, in the Manti LDS Temple. He grew up in Richfield, graduating graduat-ing from Richfield High School. He attended Utah State University and during his senior year, entered the Army and served during World War II in Combat Engineers as a major. He returned to graduate from USU and later received a Ph.D from Indiana University. He taught at Parowan High School for a year before teaching seven years at USU. He moved to Provo-Orem in 1957 and became a professor at BYU. He served as chairman of the Health Science Department for 17 years before retiring in 1984. He was a very active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had served in many capacities: as a bishop's counselor in Logan 4th Ward; as an Orem, Utah Sharon Stake high counselor; nine years as a second counselor in the Sharon Stake Presidency; five and one-half years as bishop of the BYU 97th Ward; six years as a high priest group leader; and served a mission with his wife in the California Anaheim Mission from 1985-1986. He loved all sports, gardening, and woodworking. His greatest joy was his family and his 16 grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Madge, of Orem; three daughters: Mary and J. Merrill Hansen, Carolyn and Paul R. Johnson, all of Orem; Cathy and Ron Oldroyd, Chehalis, Wash.; a son, David and Linda Sato Watters, Buffalo Buf-falo Grove, 111.; 16 grandchildren; two sisters: Helen Littlewood, Sparks, Nev.; and Ann Taylor, Grantsville. Funeral services were held February 4 in the Orem Sharon First Ward Chapel under the direction of the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial was in the Orem City Cemetery. Garth B. Buchanan Garth Boyd Buchanan, 76, of Rich-field, Rich-field, Utah, died on January 29, 1994, in Provo, Utah, at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. He was born on August 4, 1917, in Venice, Utah, to Boyd and Catherine Boyer Buchanan. He married Jewel Lundgreen on December 9, 1943, in the Manti LDS Temple. She died on November 13, 1985, He then married Lois Jeanne Fast Gillum on February 26, 1988, in Richfield, Utah. He is survived by his wife, Lois, of Richfield; three sons and four daughters and their spouses; two step-daughters and spouses; 33 grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandson; two brothers, and four sisters, including Verlene Haws of Orem. Funeral services wore February 3, 1994, in Richfield, under the direction of Neal S. Magleby and Sons Mortuary Mor-tuary of Richfield, Utah. Burial was in the Venice Cemetery. Marion Raymond Hay' Rider " M. Raymond Tla Rider, age 88, died January 31, 1994, in Provo, Utah. He was bom March 25, 1905, in Dodge City, Kansas, son of Elmer and Jennie Pierce Rider. He married Wanda Luzon Heal October 9, 1942, in Evanston, Wyoming. Ray is survived by Lis wife of Provo; two sons, including Stanley Dwayne Allman of Orem; one daughter; six grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren; great-grandchildren; one sister. Funeral services were Friday, February 4, 1994, in the Berg Drawing Draw-ing Room Chapel in Provo. Interment was in the Provo City Cemetery. ( -- j 1 y r- - i 1-P Adele Doney Young Grange Adele Doney Young Grange, 78, died February 4, 1994, at her home in Orem. She was born January 14, 1916, in Franklin, Idaho, to Laurence A. and Leila D. Young. She married Lester N. Grange March 23, 1953, in the Logan Temple. She received nurses training at Thomas D. Memorial and attended Weber College. She spent many years of her life in responsible positions at KLO Radio and Weber College in Ogden. Adele was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions, including a stake mission and Relief Society and Primary presidencies. She also enjoyed doing temple work and genealogy. Her deepest love and devotion was to her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also loved flowers, trees, and mountains. She is survived by her husband, Lester, of Orem; children: Carolyn (Ron) Jorgensen, Boise, Idaho; Robert (Neola) Grange, Centerville, Utah; Judy (Paul) Pace, Delta, Utah; 18 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers: Darin (Ruth) Young, Provo, Utah; Richard (Joan) YOung, Centerville, Center-ville, Utah; and sister-in-law, Marva (John) Elggren, Centerville, Utah. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ira Young; infant triplet sisters: Sarah, Marie, and Mariah; and a son, Lester. Funeral services will be held today, February 9, 1994, at 11 a.m. in the Orchard First Ward Chapel, 810 E. 600 North, Orem, under the direction of the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home. Joseph Lee Johnson Joseph Lee Johnson of Orem, age 22, passed away February 1, 1994, in American Fork as the result of an accident. He was born April 25, 1971, in Tor-rence, Tor-rence, California, to William Bernard Johnson, Jr., and Ann C. Johnson. He married Carla Baca on January 31, 1992, in Provo. He was a member of the LDS Church. He worked for Rocky Mountain Moun-tain Welding in Pleasant Grove. He enjoyed art, painting, and assembling models. He is survived by his wife, Carla, of Orem; his son, Deven Curtis Johnson; his mother, Ann C. Johnson of Pleasant Grove; his father, William B. Johnson, Jr., of Mesa, Arizona; his sister, Jennifer (Preston) Bushman of Mesa, Arizona; his brothers: Geoff Allen of Mesa; Robert Lynn Johnson and his sister, Laura Beth Johnson, both of Pleasant Grove; maternal grandparents: Donn and Jeannie Claybaugh of Pleasant Grove; and paternal grandmother, Josphine Johnson of Mesa, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, William Bernard Johnson, Sr. Services were held February 4 at the Provo Sixth Ward ChaDel. under the direction of the Walker Family Mortuary. Interment was in the Provo City Cemetery. Alice Sarah Day Howe Alice Sarah Day Howe, age 92, died February 1, 1994, at a care center in Provo, Utah. She was born July 19, 1901, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Gu stave and Alice Rock Day, but lived most of her childhood years in Pleasant Grove, Utah. She married Charles Fletcher Howe, also of Salt Lake, on October 5, 1922, in Salt Lake City. The marriage was later somenized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died February 10, 1980. She is survived by two daughters, including Allie Howe of Orem, and three grandsons. Funeral services were held February 4 at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel in Salt Lake City. Interment was in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. Alta Wanlass Alta Butler Wanlass, age 80, died February 2, 1994, at her homo in Lchi. She was born November 3, 1913, in Oakley, Utah, to Hyrum Alexander and Lois Ann Campbell Butlor. She married Louis Glen Wanlass in Provo; m arriage was later solcm nized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She is survived by her husband of Lchi; a son and three daughters; 20 grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; great-grandchildren; a brother, Grant Butler, But-ler, of Orem; and four sisters. The funeral was held February 5th in Lchi under the direction of Wing Mortuary. Interment was in the Lchi City Cemetery. |
