Show PORTS Page 3 Orem-Gcncva Times Wednesday, September 23, 1992 Bruin By Gina Clark The Orem Tigers emerged on top Friday after a tough defensive struggle with cross-town rivals Mountain View. The 2-0 victory puts the Tigers alone at the top of Region four as they enter the second half of region play. The Tigers went to work early, Friday, and scored two quick goals in the first half. Megan Fitzgerald followed up on a failed attempt for the Tiger's first goal. Jill Martin got the second off a pass from Adrienne Honeycutt. The real battle, however, belonged to the defenses of both teams. Orem coach Garlan Fitzgerald conceded that one of the Tiger's goals was fairly lucky, and attributed much of the win to a strong defense. 'We lacked a lot of offensive confidence;" Fitzgerald commented, "our defense pulled us through." Coming into the game, the Tigers knew they had to "keep the ball upfield and keep it away from their forwards," said senior sweeper Wendy Farley. Excellent defense from Farley, Debbie Macarthur, Anne Marie Hall, and sophomore keeper Mindy Brown stopped the Bruin offensive drives--but not without a struggle. Mountain Moun-tain View's excellent passing game and quickness allowed the Bruins to stay on the attack all afternoon. after-noon. Strong play from Jill Perry and Athelia Graham bolstered the Bruin defense and kept Orem away from the goal in the second half. A few miscues at the goal and some great defensive plays on the part of the Tigers kept the Bruins scoreless. After defeating Timpview 1-0 earlier in the week, Friday's win allows Orem to remain at the top of the region standings. But both teams realize the struggle for the region title is not over yet. Orem will travel to Mountain View to end region play on October 6a game that could decide the region championship.
