For those interested in fitness walking, 50 steps a minute-or one mile in 18 minutes is a good start "Building your pace is the key. Take the talk test. If you can't converse while walking, you're going too fast and should slow down, said Peay. Walking correctly maximizes comfort and health benefits. The proper way is symbolized by "BLARP". Bend knee slightly, Land on heel, Roll foot toward the toe, then Push off. Leg and hand weights can cause injury and should be avoided, according to Peay. Walking is also a healthy way to burn calories. According to exercise ex-ercise physiologist Denise Austin, walking on a 15-degree slope burns 600 calories in 30 minutes. To compliment a walking routine, other exercises can be performed. Austin suggests the following variations: Take long strides and swing arms to shoulder heightPunch the air overhead, right arm up while stepping with leg and vice versa. Exhale with each punch. Punch straight ahead like a shadow boxer, keeping arms parallel to the ground and abdomen tight. WalkAmerica walkers should wear comfortable, broken-in walking shoes, carry a change of socks, drink plenty of fluids, stretch well before walking and wear comfortable clothing. The annual March of Dimes WalkAmericaTeamWalk is the nation's largest walking event. More than 1300 communities nationwide participate in the event that raises money to prevent crippling crip-pling birth defects.
