Amy Nielsen looks after a loose Lady Tiger Heide Hollist looks 4 Lady Tigers finish, season on losing note By Steve Blackwell Nobody would have believed you if you said the Orem lady Tigers wouldn't make it to the State play-offs this year if you had told them that during the pre-season. After losing only one game during pre-season, and beating the likes of then-number-one Viewmont, it looked as if Orem would be State contenders. Then they fell apart. Orem had a last ditch try for a play-off berth against the Pleasant Grove Vikings last week in a must win situation. The winner win-ner of the game was to advance to . the play-offs in the region IV 4th place spot. P.G. is that team. The Tigers ended their season in a close 64-61 loss to the Vikings in a game that went down to the wire. After a red hot 3rd quarter, Orem found themselves one point favorites, 45-44. Most of Orem's points had been coming from outside out-side jumpshots whereas P.G. had been pounding it inside for a lot of garbage hoops. Being on top, Orem came out pumped up. Both teams shot well early on in the quarter, and the lead changed hands several times. With 4:30 on the clock, P.G.'s Hillary West hit a 15 foot jumper ball as the Timpview defense Baseline against the Timpview T - to put the Vikings on top 48-47. Orem answered with buckets form Carmen Bahr and Tami Frame, but Spring Smith converted con-verted on a 3-point play and Heather Johnson put in 2 of her 19 points to extend their lead to 2. As the clock ticked down to under 2 minutes, Orem began to foul. Pleasant Grove converted 5 of 6 from the line. Orem went to their outside shooters for some final hope. Suzi Paulson hit a 3 pointer with :55 seconds left; then Mary Kay Drake tossed in a 3 at the buzzer, but the Vikings had secured a win and a trip to Murray for the State play-offs. Although Orem was tied after the first period at 13, the second period belonged to the Vikings. Pleasant Grove pushed the ball inside time after time, and needed no perimeter shooting. The final 3 minutes in the half in particular were good to the Vikings as they were able to score at will. The score at half read 33-25 in favor of Pleasant Grove. . Orem 224-6783 By Steve Blackwell It was an exhausted but jubilant Orem head coach Robert Louder that entered the locker room last Friday night As well he should have been. The Orem Tigers managed to salvage some pride Friday as they picked up their first win of the season in a battle against the Pleasant Grove Vikings 77-76. With the game logistically meaningless, Louder mentioned before the game that this was the most important game of the season as his team wanted that one season win. "We are ready to play tonight. All of our kids, especially the seniors, want this game incredibly incredib-ly bad. I think that if we can control con-trol tempo, we will come out on top tonight." The Tigers did just that. Orem found themselves up 4 points after 3 periods 54-50. Pleasant Grove then went to their strong outside shooters in Danny Shcoonover, Jud Jacklin, and Eric Johnsen who responded to the call. Five 3-pointers were scored in the 4th quarter - 2 by Jacklin, 1 by Schoonover, and 2 by Johnson. The Tigers, however, weren't content to race down the court and chuck up the first open three pointer they saw. Louder called for penetration and good percentage percent-age shots. Dan Allphin led Orem underneath under-neath as he threw in two quick jumpers to give Orem a lead of 5 with just under 2 minutes to play. P.G.'s Eric Johnson then hit one of his 3's to bring the Vikings to within 2 points. Orem couldn't connect on their next possession, and P.G. then looked for Johnson again. When they found him, he was ready and hit the three-pointer to give the Vikings a one point lead with 21 seconds to play. Orem then brought the ball down court and called time-out. Louder had two players he could call on - Mike Bahr, who at the time had 23 points, or Dan Allphin who had 24. Orem set up their offense, and the Vikings called time-out. Louder called the play. "We originally set up the final play to go to one of our big guys inside. With 15 seconds left, we had I enough time to run a play. It just f turned into a scramblea-egg1 mess" Mikkleson tried to drive inside in-side but had the ball knocked Group home given deadline to apply Mayor says By Jeanne Thayne A supervised group home housing three ex-residents of the American Fork Training School and another from the Utah State Hospital has until Friday, Feb. 23, to apply for a Conditional Use Permit required by City of Orem legal code. . Nearby residents became incensed in-censed when they learned that possibly dangerous occupants had moved into the home without their knowledge. One of the occupants oc-cupants of the home is alleged to be violent and possibly dangerous to children. Bernt Murphy was released from the State Hospital after 35 years. He allegedly had raped a child and two years after he was admitted to the hospital he allegedly al-legedly confessed to the unsolved murder of a 23-year-old retarded woman. He was never charged with the murder and may have confessed under extreme pressure pres-sure from police. Murphy was declared insane and sent to the hospital. This time, there wasn't time to work anything out, so senior ace Mike Bahr grabbed the ball, drove the base-line, and calmly dropped a 15 foot jumper with 1 second left. "I knew it was in as soon as it left my hand. I saw that our original play wasn't going to develop so I just looked for the quickest way to the basket. I saw a nice seam open up and just went to it," said Bahr afterward. With one second left, Brian Rasmus sen was left to pressure the inbound pass. He jumped just as Viking Robert Strasburg let the ball fly, and knocked it away sealing the victory for the Tigers. Orem swimmers give best performance in 7 years at State meet By Steve Blackwell When Orem swimming coachbiology teacher Dan Miller stepped into his new office 7 years ago at Orem High, the first one who couldn't believe he was there was Dan himself. "If you were ask me if I was going to be a bioloev teacher com bined with a swimming teacher 10 years ago, I'd have said you were nuts," comments Miller after both his boys and girls' team finished in first place in region IV 2 weeks ago. Miller has since been building a program that he hopes will someday be a household word when it comes to high school swimming. "Brighton has always been the foremost team when it comes to swimming. I'm hoping we can get to that point in the near future." fu-ture." Orem is well on it's way to that point, and proved it at the State-meet State-meet last week where his girls took 4th place and his boys finished 9th. With a team score of 189, the Orem girls fell just 10 points short of 3rd place .East ....High. ; . ,;. v,:, ; Sherrie Bridges led the girls taking th3 first place medal in the 100 m backstroke. "Sherrie has done well all year, and she responded to the pressure that council not proceedings to begin. Perhaps it was lack of that kind of information that brought concerned citizens to fill the council coun-cil chambers demanding the city take action on shutting down the home or allaying their fears. Last Tuesday, in response to charges that the Council was "gutless," Mayor S. Blaine Willes stated, "The Council is not gutless and have demonstrated this in hard decisions. We will make those kinds 'of decisions in this case," he said. "We also are not stupid. We need to understand what we are doing and try to accomplish ac-complish the end goal. It's better to understand fully and be advised ad-vised by our attorney so we will not make a public decision without knowing the options. We wish to serve everyone in the community com-munity in a legal and proper fashion." City Attorney Paul Johnson said there are "complex legal issues is-sues on three levels of government." govern-ment." Those issues must respond to Federal, State and City codes. He said the question of a conditional use permit is legitimate and that is the stance of the City of Orem. He said the Sime "Our guys played with poise the entire game. I don't think we really did anything to hurt ourselves, oursel-ves, Pleasant Grove just played an outstanding game," added Louder. The game was close from the start, as Orem could claim only a 3 point lead at 19-16 after one period of play, thanks to some fine free-throw shooting as Orem went 8 of 8. During the 2nd quarter, P.G.'s Jud Jacklin hit two 3 pointers to start a bit of a Viking run, but Dan Allphin countered with 3 jumpers of his own, and Orem led at the half 33-31. Both Allphin and Bahr were named co-MVP's of the game as Allphin finished with 24 and Bahr had 25 including that game winner. the State meet presents," stated Miller. Tiffany Belliston finished 6th in butterfly while Nicea Muse finished 5th in both the backstroke back-stroke and the fly. Karen Brock-ston Brock-ston ended up 6th in both the 200 IM, and the breaststroke. The lady Tigers relay team of Bridges, Muse, Belliston, and Brockston also did excellent finishing 3rd overall in the 200. I was very pleased with all of our swimmers. The were competitive competi-tive despite their being so young," added Miller about his team which can claim only one senior this year, "We'll have nearly everyone back next year. "This is probably the best team we've had in the past years as far as talent and quality goes, but we build each year. All of our alumni come and support us and I think this is one reason we do so well." Miller is already looking toward next year as he mentions the kids will get a couple of days off, and then it's back to the water later this week. State officials say they do not need a conditional use permit for homes for handicapped hand-icapped adults. During last Tuesday's meeting, meet-ing, the Council dismissed for an hour-long closed door session to discuss legalities of the matter. Upon their return the attorney said the owners of the group home have until Feb. 23 to respond and until then the Council could do nothing more. Keith Turnbow said he and other concerned citizens had other options available such as "hire our own attorney or contact our legislators." He emphasized that the citizens do not want to exceed the bounds of the law. In the meantime residents of the group home are attempting to live their lives. An attorney for Murphey, Lisa Marcy, has said the men are not dangerous. Their duplex is supervised 24 hours a day and she said Murphy is not unaccompanied when he goes out. A job coach drives him to and from his dishwashing job at a north Orem cafe and the owner says Murphy has had no problems there.
