"This is the time for Political signs and highways don't mix ... Candidates for public office and their campaign workers should be aware of laws that make it illegal to place signs in the right of way of state highways, said Don Jasperson, District 6 encroachments officer for the Utah Department of Transportation.. Transport-ation.. Signs can not be placed in highway right of way without proper permits, nor can they be placed on utility poles, fences, trees or street signs in the right of way. "About this time of year it gets to be a real problem," Jasperson said. "Not only is it illegal and an eyesore, but it can be a safety hazard as well. Illegally placed signs can cut down visibility and obstruct important regulatory signs, like stop signs." UDOT policy is to remove and destroy illegally placed signs without bias to candidate or opinions. The time and money spent removing signs is considerable.
