He has been attending at-tending Snow College on an academic scholarship. Car burglaries Orem police are investigating car burglaries at 1704 S. State and 700 W. , 200 S. $500 worth of carpet tools were taken in one burglary and a $60 cassette player was taken from another. An air compressor was reported taken from a garage at 1100 W. 400 S. area Monday. A trailer power lift valued at $250 is reported missing from 600 E. 1600 S. Police investigated a burglary at Zinc Marketing, 574 N. State, in which a AM-FM stereo was taken. Entry was through an air conditioning vent in the roof. Pedersen, son of David L. Pedersen of 248 W. 1310 N., Orem, Utah, was graduated from the Navy's Hospital Corps School. During the ten-week course at Naval School of Health and Sciences, San Diego, Pedersen received instructions in-structions on the basic medical pro-, pro-, cedures used by hospital corpsmen as . they assist Navy doctors and nurses. He was also introduced to all phases of military health services, including in-cluding X-ray technology, laboratory analysis, general practice and surgery. He joined the Navy Reserves in November 1987. Col-lege. He has been an active member of the VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) organization at the high school for two years. He also holds the office of reporter for the club. Out of hundreds who applied throughout the state, 47 high school students were awarded. Steve was the only Orem student to receive the scholarship. The scholarship paid for one year's (September to June) tuition tui-tion to any secondary or vocational college in the state. Steve will attend Utah Valley Community College where he plans to pursue his trade in the cabinet making and mill shop classes. He has chosen a career in Industrial In-dustrial Education. Steve is the son of David and Glenna Yocum. Canyon Viewpoint The award winning Canyon View Jr. High Jazz Band will hold an out door pillow concert on the front lawn of the school Thursday, May 26, at 6:30 p.m. Thirty-five students will be playing old popular, big band, and jazz rock music. The Jazz Band got a superior rating at the district festival. The concert will be about one r hour. Bring a pillow or lawn chair and ' be prepared ' for ; some wonderful ' music.; Admission is free. Kindergarten children put on a program called "In The Library." Mrs. Kristi Graham and Mrs. Rosemary Mackay are the teachers. The children learned how to take care of books and that books are fun and exciting. Foster grandparents honored By Jeanne Thayne "It helps me keep alert. . .and a little cash doesn't hurt," quipped Af-ton Af-ton Young who was honored at the annual an-nual Foster Grandparent Recognition Banquet held in American Fork recently. She advised everyone to "get up and get going and your life will be swell." Another foster grandparent, Donald Fox, enjoys working with kids at the state hospital. "I get squeals of delight from the youngsters when I go into their living quarters," said Fox. "I joke and tease them and give them a big hug. Anything to make them happy. We work at whatever their mental capacity will allow," he said. Fox said being with the kids is "a lot -better than speaking." Charles J. Dearing is director of -the Foster Grandparent program which began 23 years ago and has grown continuously since that time. "My heart is filled with the program," pro-gram," he said. "I love all of you very much." Speakers at the program also included in-cluded Utah County Commissioner Gary J. Anderson who hailed the Foster Grandparent Program. "If it weren't for these ladies my kids couldn't read as well as they do." He said the program should be enhanc- -ed throughout the county. "It's affecting affec-ting lives. Three year awards: Emma Baxter, Bax-ter, Maurine Burningham, Grace SCERA names new manager for Shell amphitheater An actor, director and businessman from Tulsa, Oklahoma has been brought to the SCERA Shell in Orem this summer to manage the outdoor amphitheater. David Whitlock will oversee show production and supervise the overall physical plant, says Norm Nielsen, president of SCERA. "We get an extra bonus with David," says Nielsen. "He also happens hap-pens to be a very fine actor and wUl reprise the role of George M. Cohan--a role he played last summer to very good reviews at the Pink Garter Theatre in Jackson Hole, Wyo.-in the Shell's production of 'George M.'" Nielsen saw Whitlock in performance perfor-mance last summer, and first inquired in-quired about his availability to star in a SCERA production. . ; "When I realized that he was interested in-terested and that I also had a potential poten-tial opportunity to use him for the Shell management post, I snatched the chance. "Only 25 students are ultimately selected, and we have the unique opportunity op-portunity of working in a specialized way with top people in many areas of acting," explains Whitlock. He also attended the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute Workshop where he was able to study under actress ac-tress Jane Alexander and to perform in half a dozen community .theater productions in Oklahoma.
